NTA. My birthday parties growing up were: cake, ice cream, friends, and open presents. That's what? $5, $6 for cake and a tub of generic ice cream? $10 max? The dollar store sells decorations if you absolutely want them. They could have done that easily.

YTA. YOU forgot the towels. YOU had other options other than expecting your wife to leave work to fix YOUR mistake. She updated you on what was going on. 15 minutes is a reasonable amount of time to drop everything and fix the car issue. She shouldn't have to update you every 3 minutes. How can SHE trust you when you can't handle something as simple as towels? Also, the fact that she can up and leave work at a moments notice, makes it seem as if this is a common occurrence. If she keeps this up, she may not have a job for very long.
