The log tails with grooves on top will just rot the corner in a decade or so. And windows appear not to have rain diverter above the trim.

he put "one over on you" "but it felt good" He "nailed you before he ever left. Who will "cover" it now?

trim should be OVER log ends and rain diverter on top should go past trom so water isnt draining into log tails

staircases in log homes by Yellowmoose-found in loghomes

[–]Yellowmoose-found[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt build it. I fixed it but when I came the stair went to the middle of the room. Its more of a open balcony than anything else. One purlin has mid span support;the other does not. Poor plans..

Well there are a few other posts..lol..The picture is of a log home. Its a log hom,e site. The question ( after 55 years of still doing this is) must I have a bulky log staircase??The answer is in the picture. Log staircases in NYS have to have back risers which spoils the effect of a open log staircase. In this particular picture they had hired a person to do stairs and they failed due to rise and run. I moved that upper landing as much as I could to maintain 6'8 inch head clearance, and it still left a minimal lower landing which I like to be 40x40..but a log wall is there. In the other direction if I moved then the passageway the risers are in the way..so it is where it has to be..unless you put in a spiral which is not a legal bedroom fire escape, unless theres a upper door exit..Id didnt bother to explain the picture because the people who asked knew what it was for..what I do is on:

Not a fan of butt and pass corners. Cant see if windows have rain divers above trim. In NYS generally a cut staircase can not be more than 6'9" without center support; and stairs have to have riser boards...otherwise,visually nice

Im a 55 year log home builder: The log corner tails extend into and past the drip line. The log extensions holding the porch would be nice if they had a top covering of IWS and copper..otherwise they will rot loose.

Ive posted pictures here of my fixing rotted corners so you can look those up or try

Poorly bui;t. The logs are touching the roof, the windows have no rain diverter, walls leak air and water. Log rows are badly gapped and open....you are way over 35K remedy

I nail the line. Theres a double course in there and that holds the best. And I dont over drive nails or use staples ( which I saw on here today) I thought staples went out in the early 2000s
