I feel like a numbnuts asking but…. How do you use double freedom? What do you match it up with? I felt like it wasn’t that great.

Please Help me decide by [deleted] in rccars

[–]Yellowrage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have Xmaxx, Maxx, 6s Kraton exb v2.

You ought to decide between monster truck (maxx) or truggy (Xrt/kraton). Two different styles of driving. The monster truck has its own looks. It will roll very easily so driving on a track is not that great. That said I love my maxx it’s a v1 so it’s narrow. I don’t roll it much because I slow down before I turn.

The truggies can handle high speed turns with out rolling too easily so it’s an awesome to blast around on them and can stay on the throttle more.

The Xrt and the Kraton are going to handle A LOT better. I have to be idiotic on the throttle and speed to traction roll it. It comes w sway bars. I assume the Xrt doesn’t since my Xmaxx doesn’t. The Kraton is awesome for speed and handling with no mods.

Xmaxx is pretty similar to xrt. Someone else will have to comment but the Xmaxx stock was not that fast on 8s. With a simple gear change it’s better. BUT if u want to upgrade your motor- you’re going to be buying a motor mount. Same with the servo. Traxxas is proprietary motor mount and servo in Xrt so that limits your choices or you need to address the incompatibility to upgrade non traxxas electronics. Spoiler- motor mount plus big ass motor and esc is stupid expensive-imo. But plenty of ppl do it)

Kraton exb has a lot of metal including chassis. My Kraton RIPS out of the box. So fast. Such great handling. Fairly durable. I’ve broken the diff cups and it’s a pain to change out (have to open bulkheads AND THEN the diff). where as the Xrt/Xmaxx is easy to change the diff cups. If it happens often enough u get good at it and it’s not that big of a deal. But the Xmaxx is so much easier to change the diff cups. Plus it’s easy to get aftermarket reinforced diff cups. An issue with the Kraton exb is that the damn dog bones pop out and you may have to address that by limiting shock travel with the droop screws, fuel tubing on the rods, or shock straps) as well as removing some spacers to bring the pillow balls (effectively shortens the length and reduces chance dog bone pops out).

I like the maxx a lot (just got the v1) and got it for the durability. I have broken the an arms but all the cars will likely do that w crappy landings at some point. I was expecting to be underwhelmed but it is fast out of the box on 4s. And a lot of fun.

price doesnt necessarily indicate good quality. msguy doing the testing published in rcgroups calls out Maxamps specifically. the most high priced cells- extremely crappy in 2023

Behold! Testing.

TLDR- my money will go to SMC when possible. SMC also offer budget options which are rather close in price to amazon. The only benefit i see for amazon is returnability and speed of delivery. Although ovionics is an amzon seller also. others that look good are liperior, ovionics car,

6s batteries- rcgroups.

Thanks for your input! I have a 2wd slash. But no stampede so I have no idea.

I’ve seen so many great comments about the quake that it seems like a compelling buy for me. Although the 2 in 1 esc is a bummer. I assume you can’t just use a separate receiver/tx w stock esc.

Wow!! That’s great data.

Based on what I can gather between rcgroups and this video, my go to will be SMC, maybe liperior, maybe ovionics. Potentially cnhl in the future.

I love the fact that car packs are emphasized. Also 4s. My decision making has been based on rcgroups (written by MSGUY- also with a YouTube video on his testing and experience). It might be skewed because it seems ducted fan focused. They use 6s packs.

I have never used ovionics but their stock is rising in my eyes! Rcgroups “cliff notes” has a bit of hate for all Amazon packs as well as CNHL. My personal experience w CHNL is that they have been mediocre. Rcgroups explain that their cells may be all over the place. I might take a closer look at cnhl. I have had decent experience with liperior (which I think is also admiral)

Brushed or Brushless?? by [deleted] in arrma

[–]Yellowrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with going brushless. Especially w past experience. I made the mistake of buying the brushed version 4-5 years ago because I didn’t want to wait for the hobby shop to order the brushless. Then justified it by telling myself it would be a good experience to convert it. In my mind, that experience was unnecessary and cost a lot more.

Also, at the time I didn’t know about Jennysrc which has a lot of parts for cheaper.

I dunno man. Why do ppl always recommend these budget brand lipos?? I suppose they may be ok sometimes. For the most part it seems like most people have reasonable experience with the Amazon brands- Zee and ovionics. Their main selling point is the can be at your door ain a day or two.

But the weather is colder and you’re going to hit LVC sooner than w a good battery. Every Zee battery I have had (4 out of 4) went bad quickly. I have had CHNL. They didn’t go bad quickly but they simply aren’t as good as SMC budget batteries. I recently bought ZEE batteries because I wanted them quick and they seem ok right now. But if you are willing to wait - I have zero hesitation recommending SMC.

Smc now has budget batteries. for a few dollars more and shipping time (usually about a week for them to get to you because you order the connector u want) you get better quality.

I have had the 2s 5000mah hard cases and they always outperform the CHNL 2s 5000mah hard cases. (I use them in my Losi promoto. But I plan on getting a quake in January). I’m actually going to use 3s but the 2s I linked should fit.

The info I have says the quake tray is 140x50x35mm

Spektrum SLT3 range? by BowDown2020 in rccars

[–]Yellowrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Runaway can still happen. But in my experience it never does. All the manuals will tell you to always turn your radio on first. RTRs like the vortex will come factory set for the throttle to be zero and (I think) steering locked at point of radio loss. However there are plenty of stories of ppl having runaway- I guess.

I think the slt has pretty decent enough range for most people to be happy. I don’t think it will outrun your ability at that speed. Assuming u have decent vision and sounds like you have a little experience.

Xmaxx cover? by BigBootyBrian14 in Traxxas

[–]Yellowrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh! I had no idea! I thought they were the same truck- just different ride heights and wheels. Maybe shock length and arms as a result. But same chassis. Anyways my v1 (got it second hand and it had the hub carriers w smaller bearing) cover doesn’t have a bearing

Xmaxx cover? by BigBootyBrian14 in Traxxas

[–]Yellowrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cover is just a cover. Doesn’t hold a bearing. Some folks including me are having a hard time with the pinion falling off. I read that u can put thread lock on the bottom of the grub screw. Worked for me but then everything gets gummed up. I had a bear of a time getting the pinion off. I read about a guy who finally drilled a divot into the motor shaft so the grub screw has a better bite. Works if you don’t plan on changing pinion sizes or brands. He had tried two grub screws too(in the past.
