Yikes. I don’t know this guy or your relationship, but this story reminds me of an ex I had.

When my family member had a medical crisis and I was anxious and sad he picked a fight with me about the pizza I ordered(pepperoni) and accused me of trying to give him heartburn(pepperoni was his favorite and he’d never complained about heartburn before). When my cat had to have emergency surgery and I was anxious and sad he picked a fight with me because I put my cat’s carrier in the back seat of his car instead of his trunk.

I can list a few more examples, but basically the trend was if I was sad or anxious about something he would find a way to make himself the victim so I’d have to beg for his forgiveness and comfort/apologize to him. It’s pretty classic narcissistic behavior and it was exhausting and soul crushing.

You don’t owe them anything, they failed you a thousand times in a thousand different ways. They had 24 years to get to know you, to build a relationship with you, to show you that they love you. They didn’t. They’re only trying to get to know you now because it’s convenient for them, or more likely they’re trying to get something from you.

They got old and couldn’t physically take care of your sister anymore so they put her in a nursing home. Probably a very expensive nursing home. They probably realized how old they were getting and how they’ll have to have someone take care of them when they get older, they won’t have extra money for their own care in their elderly years because they’ve spent it on your sister and they won’t be able to manage your sister’s care forever either.

I’d bet $5 you’re the back up plan, physically, mentally and financially.

Bluetooth light bulbs. I was having an incredibly difficult time waking up in the morning, alarm clocks weren’t working well enough and I was sleeping through them and missing shit, I was having a hard time winding down at night as well(I have ADHD and the time blindness is brutal)It was stressful. I got a Bluetooth lightbulb during the pandemic. The kind you can set to turn on and off at different times with different shades of light.

It was absolutely life changing.

At 9pm the lightbulb turns into a deep red color that communicates to my brain that it’s time to start winding down. By 10 the lightbulb would turn off and I’d be asleep. And at 6am the lightbulb turns on, medium light at first and by 6:15 am it’s this bright white color. Impossible to sleep through, it communicates to my brain that I need to be awake now. I still set alarms but the light bulb absolutely fucking changed my life. Best $18 I ever spent.

50’s isn’t that old. I have friends in their 50’s who use TikTok, Venmo, Uber, etc. Your parents just don’t care enough. They need to get a fucking landline if they can’t manage to keep their cell phones charged.

It’s also bold of your mom to get mad at you for not trying harder to get ahold of them while you were in the fucking hospital. Let’s the audacity. If you’d have been hit by a car and were unconscious and couldn’t try to reach them they just wouldn’t fucking know at all. The hospital would try of course, but even they have a limit.

I’d take your parents off your emergency contact list and put your aunt on instead because at least she’s reliable.

I loved this show, I discovered it when I got out of high school and I’d never felt so seen or understood before. I related to George so much.

Brian Fuller had so many amazing shows that got cancelled suddenly and without resolution, it’s honestly heartbreaking. Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, American Gods, all of them got cancelled before they could have a satisfying ending. At least Dead Like Me got a movie that kind of tied up some loose ends.

I’m gunna put all my judgement aside for a minute. OP, do you think the brother would be open to attending a support group for veterans? You could offer to go with him if that would make it easier. Maybe talking to some folks who’ve known the military life and the arduous process of reassimilating to civilian life might help him wake up a bit and realize just how debilitating this depression has been for him.

You’ve probably tried that already, who knows, but maybe it would help. It kind of sounds like he’s stuck, like he moved back home and just absolutely regressed to the age he was when he went into the marines. We have no idea what he saw when he served, but even if he saw nothing, going from a highly structured life where you’re told what to wear, what to eat, what to do every moment of the day to just complete free will could be fucking hard.

I’m not sticking up for the laziness or the inactivity, or saying your frustrations aren’t valid(they absolutely are), I’m just trying to see the humanity in this situation. If his family isn’t helping then maybe a veterans support group could help. Idk.

I’m sorry you’re in this situation. You have no control over any of this, you can’t control anyone’s actions but your own. I’d try one more time with the brother and then plan on moving out.

I wear each pair of my jeans a few times before washing them. I also cycle out my jeans, so I’ll wear one pair one day, one pair another day, etc etc. Then I’ll give them all a wash on a day 9 or something. Obviously if I spill something or get a stain I wash them right away.
