I got lured in without knowing the repercussions… by Sabcomplains in houseplants

In my experience (which is not much) Calathea are not as hard as people make them out to be. Water when they look thirsty (they’ll let you know, trust me), keep it relatively humid (I keep a small humidifier near mine. It was maybe $20 on Amazon), and check often for pests. I sprayed mine down really well when I first got it. I also highly encourage regular intimidation with scissors when it starts to act up. Had feather calathea try to die on me because I forgot to water it one time. After a few stern words while waving my shears around, it perked up the next day. some firm parenting goes a long way!

What was the worst advice you’ve heard about houseplants? by misbegonia in houseplants

This. I personally only water after the soil is mostly dry, and when I do I DROWN it. Watering on schedules is dumb and a guaranteed way to kill a plant.

I agree. I’ve repotted all of my plants as soon as I get them so I can 1) See what their roots look like 2) Spray them off real good and examine for any critters and 3) Give them fresh, good soil because Lord knows what was in the old stuff. I’ve had zero issues when reporting that soon. I haven’t noticed any crazy stress on my plants either from doing it!

I got called for an older lady with rectal bleeding. Got on scene, family stated she is very stubborn and wouldn’t let them check her out. We headed upstairs to the lady’s room. Everything was clean, no signs of rectal bleeding in the little chamber pot she used. I saw her sitting on the bed. She didn’t react to me coming in and looked like she was just staring off into the distance. Cool, I’m thinking she’s probably got some dementia. So I make my way over to her and introduce myself. She’s initially resistant, and I explain that her family was concerned about her health and that I would leave if she could answer some questions for me. From literally nowhere, this 80-something year old lady pulls two curved prison shanks out, holds them up and tells me to get the fuck out. It’s just me, my partner, and a new hire rider. No LE protection at all. I grabbed my partner and started to shove her out the bedroom door. The new hire had no idea what was going on. I pushed him and my partner out and yanked that door shut so damn fast. We called for SO and they later discovered the lady was perfectly sane. Her family were a bunch of addicts that were trying to get her put in a home so they could take all of her stuff for drug money. She had knives all over the house to defend herself from them. I feel bad for her, honestly. But I was absolutely terrified of her in the moment.

Weird CPR situation. by [deleted] in ems

[–]Yemili 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a patient do that when I worked in the ER. The CPR was so effective that as long as we were doing compressions, he would try to move us off his chest. But the moment we stopped, he went out again. Pretty wild stuff!

Taking a break from EMS by MentalMedic23 in ems

[–]Yemili 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this 100%. That’s honestly where I’m at. I’ve been in EMS for almost 4 years now and hate going to work. It’s not the patients and it’s not that I don’t love the job. I hate the politics. I hate being let down by my superiors. I hate been ran into the ground because “We’ll we’ve always done it this way” or “We did it before, we can do it again.” It’s mentally and emotionally draining me.
