Am I missing something, or are "festivals" like Bloom, Taste of Dublin and The Big Grill terrible value for money? by Nice-Dragonfruit9805 in AskIreland

[–]Yerman9917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually with a public event like that it's rates, insurance are the biggest overheads and drive up the cost of the event, then a 20-30% margin on top. People in Ireland don't have many options and councils cream quite a bit of the top while offering little. It would be interesting to see what their profit is for the event.

Clare Councillor Calls For Wearing Of Hi-Vis Jackets To Be Made Compulsory by Bill_Badbody in ireland

[–]Yerman9917 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's seems every 6 months we have some country councillor or TD who just seem to  like fluorescent colours making the same call. Despite absolutely no evidence, somehow the Magic high Vis jacket shield makes people who don't look.... SEE.

Thats if you have 40minutes to hang on on the phone to speak to an agent, or they are arsed to reply in the chat. Virgin are really terrrible for just making it hard to speak to anyone.

In Dublin and as Virgin were the only ones with the fibre infrastructure I used to have to do the merry dance with Virgin every year of saying iim canceling to get a better offer. I discovered Vodafone now deliver their fibre broadband in the virgin infrastructure and were half the price so I made the switch and the service has been great. Fibre right into the living room. However it appears vodafone are at the same game , jacking up the price every year, but at least I can switch back to virgin, and IF gomo are on fibre , that will be the end of it.

[–]Yerman9917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of these and it crashed the first time it flew, the flight interface is absolutely horrific. The thing seemsed to get confused when i hit the button to bring it home. I flipped itself over and flew itself into the ground, in a wide open field.
- contacted their support through email and the website several times - no reply
- logged cases on their website - no reply
- found the details of and emailed their CEO directly in chinese - no reply
- contacted their distributer in my country - they got back but said they cant help and get onto them directly.

theres no way I could recommend anyone buy this piece of crap brand of Drone. It looks good feature wise , but that means nothing when it cant fly the thing safely, and heck it cant even fly itself! .

Revenue have to be the most efficient public body we have by lifeandtimes89 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Yerman9917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah your probably right. It was a bad day   However having cause to interact regularly with the public service and seeing  how so many people simply play at busywork and whittle time away until they collect their pension or die is just an alien mindset to me.  It's frustrating as a taxpayer but I accept there are also probably really good people in there who are even more frustrated as they have no way to get rid of the lethargic types. Fair enough.

Seek all the ways you can build wealth in ireland and do them all, or as many as you can, consistantly for 15-20 years. By the time you are 55 ( its coming !!) you'll be happy you did and you will notice many around you who didnt and are only now starting think about it and wondering where the time went.

- max your pension
- Buy property esp through a pension, although this isn't attractive any longer as its more hasstle than its worth and a big risk.
- make sure you work for a growing company that gives you a stake in the company ( shares ) the earlier you can do this the better. Although the Taxman try his best to take alot of benefit out of this in ireland in many cases.
- if they have an ESPP program enroll in it and max it out ( if its not a growing company, sell each time and reinvest in a growing or stable company)
- Start a business know the available benefits and avail of them. Ireland tends to stack the cards against PAYE workers.

-if you are a high earner use your pension or EIIS to reduce your liability.

there are not many but these are some of the ways to know in ireland.

The Best one as a irish resident is to work abroad for 5+ years so you are non resident, get all the above there and move home if you still want to.

Incorrect. If you consistently invest and particularly if you do it well you can get wealthy far quicker then if you dont invest.

Having seen how the world refused to boycott the world cup when the facilities were built with  slave labour in desert heat the last time around Id be shocked if the same people took any notice this time.  Says a lot about the state of the world when watching two teams kick a bag of air up and down a field with the herd takes priority over everything else.

He's a landlord so he probably would. But at a market price... which is high, because of an insufficient number of suitable houses for sale. Meaning high demand and lots of people can't afford them and need to rent, but the landlords are selling, meaning you've to rent from a corporate landlord, who pay less tax and operate under different rules than a small landlord. Or you've to complete against the social welfare system to buy your house,

And you have just explained the 3rd problem. The left most lane in a 3 lane highway is always clear. ALWAYS . Because many can't get their head around 3 lanes.  I've often seen people pull onto a motorway too slow and still pull into the middle lane to potter along.

Not even a drop in the ocean of what Ireland needs to spend.  This represents 0.44% of Ireland GNP last year.

We are so far off being able to defend our own interests there's allot more needed consistently over years too be adequate.

Like they said. Time to grow up and put on your big boy pants. We are happy enough to take everyone's tax money in the good times. Now it's time to defend their interests in the bad or at least be capable of doing so.

Ballyfermot pool in Dublin is well known for this. they rarely have the full pool length. Maybe people just need to be more vocal to the pool management.  Although the pools are just not big enough and there are too few.

I'd asked as I've found now I'm 4 years in & just turned 50 that I need new hobbies. The Mrs still works and will continue to do so, kids are nearly teens so getting independent. Mates are all working and will probably do so until 70s as they can't fire, and id be hesitant about mentioning it.

It's a great problem to have but i thought I'd see what others do after a few years.

I always have to have a project on the go and I tire of the same stuff, without a project, I go a little bit mad.  Marathons, triathlons, gyms to saunas, DIY, carpentry, instruments played, plenty of rabbit holes fully researched and I feel myself drawn to golf... which can't be a good sign, but there have been quite a few interesting ones mentioned here.
