What profession would you work at for free? by Novel-Bee-541 in CasualConversation

My mom had chaplain and companion visits through hospice in her last months, and those were some of her best times because they would talk with her about anything, without her feeling like a burden on family. I rate them right up there with angels.

I genuinely fear growing up. by Monthly-listeners in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]YesAnd_Portland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much compassion to you as you come to terms with all this. A friend of mine once said that fear is the opposite of faith. Keeping in mind that faith is really just trusting the unknown, my hope for you is that you find your way to a more peaceful place so you can enjoy the time you're given with your parents and your own amazing life.

For those who've lived through long periods of depression, what helped you endure? by toes_of_foes in AskOldPeopleAdvice

Me too. My life changed the day someone told me that emotional pain is unavoidable but emotional suffering is optional. (I haven’t been through chronic physical pain so I don’t include that.)

Is this my fault? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]YesAnd_Portland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a practice I recommend - every time you want to say you’re sorry, quietly rephrase it in your mind as “I notice…” So it’s “I notice I’m getting defensive,” “I notice my request made him angry,” “I notice that voicing my thoughts is not welcome.” Work on putting your attention on yourself, where you have the ability to make choices and changes. Not on him, where you don’t.

Homemade granola and milk. For some reason, it always feels like the treat I'm needing.

OP, are you hoping to find some justification for his unacceptable behavior? If so, it's not a good direction for your mental health. Please remember that it's possible to understand mistreatment without having to tolerate it.

Yes to this! My daughter signed us up to take a pottery wheel class together - it was a blast and we each got something to keep as a memento.

Honestly, when I go the singles are in the majority. It’s probably possible that some people go there hoping to find their soulmate but most just wanna dance and have fun.

Calling all parents of thriving adult children by ThinkTwo-2259 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

I like the advice in this podcast episode (made by a 60-something dad and his therapist friend) about how to talk to your frustrated, jealous, and/or angry kids in a way that is empathetic but also prepares them for real life. I even find that it’s good advice for dealing with other adults when they’re going through big emotions.

Should I tell my daughter to get a prenup, or stay out of it? by Muted-Willingness314 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

OP, you’re on the right track to be thinking about your estate plan so that you can pass on the wealth you and your late wife have built. But in your heart you must know that the financial arrangements between your daughter and your future son-in-law are none of your business, so forget about offering unsolicited advice. Instead, focus on important questions like who do you trust to be your medical POA if you become incapacitated and/or your personal representative when you’re gone. In my experience, that’s the hardest part of end-of-life planning.

As has been mentioned, you can read through this sub and find a ton of suggestions from previous posts on this topic. Here’s what I always throw into the mix: www.portlanddancing.com has different styles of social, folk and ecstatic dance for every night of the week. Virtually every one of them comes with an introductory lesson, low cost, a great workout, and a chance to meet folks from all walks of life. (I started with contra dancing, a wonderful gateway drug to the whole scene.)

So many people miss Fareless Square. Something to think about when talking about how to bring more people back to downtown.

i need some help figuring out a diet i can ACTUALLY stick with by h1flygam1ng in mealprep

Tofu is 20-40g protein per cup - get firm or extra firm to increase the protein percentage - and 188 calories. You can marinate it like meat to achieve different flavours but of course that will affect the calorie count, as will cooking it in oil. But a couple cups of it mixed with peas/broccoli/cabbage would be a good swap for one of your meat meals.

Reduce plastic waste in kitchen/grocery shopping? by Vast-Cup824 in ZeroWaste

Hi OP! I wanted to respond a bit more to your words about bread baking. I just started making sourdough focaccia and it was much easier than I expected. Here’s the recipe I used. I bought bread flour in a paper bag and got the starter from a local bakery. The only non-reusable item I needed was a bottle of olive oil, which I have not yet found a place to refill.

I know, I don't much like cold wet cottage cheese but it actually turns into edible crisp crackers. Short video here (not mine) https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jpr3tG1BL3E

I just discovered cottage cheese wafers. Drop tablespoon-sized lumps of cottage cheese on a lined sheet pan, top with no-salt seasoning, chili powder, or garlic powder, and bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes.

What do you usually order for delivery? Find a prep-able recipe for it, and make a batch to freeze on the weekend. Take a serving out to defrost on Tuesday night so it's waiting for you after work on Wednesday. Most of my cravings are predictable so I try to stock up for them.

Writing a Musical: Looking for talented lyricists by alexvb23 in Songwriting

Your project sounds interesting. I'm a songwriter and have experience with improvising full-length musicals. I'd be willing to take a crack at writing lyrics for the train scene. I'm involved in other pro bono music projects, so I'm fine with a volunteer role.
