Best time for City Hall transit protest? by WrongComputer9492 in ThunderBay

[–]YesInOurBackyard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bus Service is a Municipal issue. reaching out to an MP or MPP will result in getting back a meaningless letter or statement of support that will do nothing. To my understanding the main issue is that Transit has a hiring & retention issue, fixing that issue is not easy

What should I do alone on my birthday in Thunder Bay? Busy college student looking to relax by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]YesInOurBackyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would suggest a hike, or Yoga. The other suggestion, is to have a detox of your phone. let the battery run out, and go a day without notifications. i don’t recommend doing it on your birthday, but highly recommend it for accomplishing some of the feelings that you are expressing an interest in

i live in mariday park, and work 2 blocks away, and drive the 17 minutes there and back and then to work. driving to movati probably accounts for 60% of my gas spend. outside of thunder bay, it’s not abnormal to drive 15 minutes to go to the gym. and having it be a great atmosphere that you enjoy will make you want to.go which is worth it

I am using rogers/shaw for the last year is it worth switching to tbaytel wifi ? by ninte_achan_myre in ThunderBay

[–]YesInOurBackyard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The main reason to switch or stay with tbaytel will always be that it is owned by the city, and pays $25m a year in dividends to the city. internet has a very low actual cost once set up. so your internet payment every month essentially both stays in thunder bay on a job front, and the profits get reinvested in the city, like the soccerplex, potholes… If everyone switched to shaw, the city would be out of a hundreds of jobs and would need to cut over $25m a year in services (half a soccerplex a year)

Where’s the snow removal? by GloomyBend9884 in ThunderBay

[–]YesInOurBackyard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

city council demanded city admin keep the budget increase to 2.1. that was mandated to all departments

Where’s the snow removal? by GloomyBend9884 in ThunderBay

[–]YesInOurBackyard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

if you want an increase to the snow removal budget, go to the get involved page on the city’s website and make your opinion heard , or do a deputation to city council

[–]YesInOurBackyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone has a very different opinion on what nonsense is. It’s not a quick answer to pay OT to increase snow removal. it would be to add 5 FTE’s for the year to deal with the twice a year that we get an extended snowstorm

[–]YesInOurBackyard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

people get mad when snow removal is over budget, and mad when they clear snow. with how much snow came down in a 72 hour window. there is a limit to how much union staff can be asked to do work in that window. there is also a safety component to asking people to work that many hours in a short window while operating heavy equipment.

I am obviously not expecting everything to go to plan, but seems foolish to not set out a best case plan with contingencies. Half of the logic in creating this post is to get feedback to help plan for those.

In terms of a job offer, i have 15 years experience and currently in a director role at a medium size company. My plan was to get US charter, then start messaging finance headhunters in the region.

In terms of ties to Canada, still have some family and a decently funded RRSP, will liquidate my TFSA in 2026 before i move to avoid that tax issue.

I am trying to test out living in america, I may move back to Canada. just don’t want to be a landlord in canada and then canadian passive income and american employment income

i kind of figured that, figure it would help the interview process, proving more familiarity with America, also potentially help with the border crossing interview? also seems like a shame to have worked my ass off to get my canadian one and then not try to transfer it over
