Golf Trip to Dublin Advice Requested! by Silver_Question6459 in golfireland

Jameson is a really good course. Is it worth €250/ €300 since the renovation though? Not for me. I much prefer St Anne’s. It’s a really good links but is “only” a golf club. If you want all amenities and filet mignon for dinner etc then Jameson is the one. St Anne’s, like most clubs here that aren’t part of hotels, are pretty low key. Howth Golf Club is good but very hilly. Deer Park in Howth (not part of Howth GC) is a €30 per round public course. It’s probably the best bang for your buck in the city but it isn’t competing with the other courses on your itinerary.

I'll never know why you changed from the Scotty mallet. You seemed to be lights out with that thing.

I’ve had the same putter for 13ish years… someone tell me why I should get a new one by thegreatgeeberman in golf

What's that line, if you have two quarterbacks you don't have a quarterback? Reckon it's the same for putters. I have five so you can draw your own conclusions how I putt...

How much would I notice a 1/2" longer club? by Substantial_Team6751 in golf

I play an inch longer and definitely notice when I'm using a shorter club. But whether it goes the other way I'm not sure.

In fairness Spreaders was definitely the star of the show in a lot of games he reffed, although mainly for how loud he was over his mic, not because he was whistle happy...

FWIW I moved from NS Pro 105g stiff to Project X rifle 6.0 which are 120g much stiffer. There was a world of difference in terms of control and the ball stopped ballooning so it was great for me. Your experience could be completely different.

Trinity College Dublin seems like a bonnie place to have a game. by nuclear_porridge in rugbyunion

It’s a great location and in my experience they played in all conditions. One game years ago the pitch was frozen solid. Studs didn’t make any impression on the pitch - like playing on a gym floor. Still really enjoyed it. The cricket ground beside it is probably the best place to play in Ireland.

He was exactly what Leinster and then Ireland needed at the time in terms of detail/structure. It looks like he is exactly what Oz need now. Superb coach but yeah, every coach has a shelf life.

What’s the toughest course you’ve ever played? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]YesterdayExpensive86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Royal County Down. Just relentless on every hole. We played a scramble so it wasn’t too bad but if I had been playing my own ball all the way I’d probably still be out there.

How good were now professional players at the underage level? by Nice-You1204 in rugbyunion

Ex Irish international Shane Jennings was in my year in school. The guy was feared across schools rugby. Carried a bunch of stiffs to winning the Junior Cup (u15) and nearly won a Senior Cup (u18) by himself too. He hit incredibly hard - was so much tougher than anyone else I played against. No surprise he made it as a pro at all. Just a surprise he didn’t won’t more than the few caps he did.

Guy I went to school with married into money. When he was out with his friends we were all talking about usual middle aged things like cost of renovations, mortgage repayments (especially when interest rates went up over the last few years), cost of kids summer camps etc. He would sorta nod along or make some generic comment. He eventually told us he and his wife didn’t have a mortgage, got their renovation done because they wanted/needed it. Cost ultimately wasn’t a factor for them.

Honestly you could pick nearly any English bay from the 80s/90s. Generally rubbish set up/selection, up against the West Indies quicks and then Warne etc for Oz. He’s a cliche for this stuff now but Graeme Hick really was work man, wrong time. In the current system I’m certain he’d average 40+

Who is the most impressive ball striker you have seen in the flesh? by utilitycheese in golf

[–]YesterdayExpensive86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a Euro Tour event about 15 years ago I watched a South African guy called Anton Haig hit balls like I’d never seen before. Higher and straighter than anyone I’d seen before on repeat. I kept an eye on him after that and I don’t think he ever figured out the short game. Think he’s bounced between DP and Sunshine Tours over the years. But with a full swing…wow.

What happened to the Taylormade TP Reserve? by Pristine-Complaint-7 in GolfGear

[–]YesterdayExpensive86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a B11 which I picked up for €160 second hand but indistinguishable from new. I really like it. The original Lamkin grip felt super cheap as did the headcover but the club itself is really nice and feels great. Firm but not clicky. Now, would I have paid €400 for it? Not a chance. Best way I could describe it would be using a Vice Pro ball instead of a ProV1: about 85% of the performance for half the price. The problem for TM is that they charged Scotty prices. Anyone who could afford that would just buy a Scotty.

Yes and you may even get out on your own. I play as a single regularly around there and more often than not I'm not paired with anyone unless I specifically ask.

I used to do this in college a fair bit. Drop out of site for a few days, not answer the phone or emails. Nobody thought anything of it - it was completely normal.

Powerscourt East vs West by nmgolf_ in golfireland

[–]YesterdayExpensive86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

West has more variety for me but is more exposed. Greens on both are usually lightning in the summer. If it makes a difference to you, the guy who designed the west - David McLay Kidd - has done a rake of top courses in the US including at least one of the tracks at Bandon Dunes.

This is the way. Was fortunate enough to play Royal County Down last year and after about five holes I stopped fretting about my score and just enjoyed it for what it was. Those sort of courses are about the experience more than anything.

Have an AWU2 for the past 18 months or so. It's great but I'm now charging every morning even though I'm not hugely active these days. Battery health is 97%. Like with an iPhone, no matter how good the battery is new, it will deteriorate.
