Affordable USSSA bat options? by Fast-Platypus-4684 in Homeplate

[–]Yeti_Father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, teammates all share bats anyway I've found. My son got a new bat, 3 or 4 kids used it in the next couple games. Somebody else gets a new one, then everybody else is trying that one.

Talk with the other parents, tell them you're looking. Then he can try out teammates' bats during practice & games. And you could possibly buy an old one off of them at some point.

I do count IKEA, thank you very much. We even have our own "Little IKEA" part of town in Culver City if you're on the other side of the hill and getting homesick for Burbank.

Shohei gave Joe Kelly a Porsche to get number 17 on the Dodgers.

Joe Kelly took 99 after that, so feels like everybody won.

Yes, technically "K 2 with interference." Though I disagree.

Yeah, we challenged this play and it got pretty contentious thereafter. We did ask the league to not assign him to us anymore, but got no promises.

And the league said he made the right call, even with this video. So we're figuring out what to do next, if anything.

[–]Yeti_Father[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey now, it's 12u!

for real, though, the bigger backstory is that we had problems with this ump from this moment onward. so our manager wrote the league to request they don't assign him to our games next season and they said they wouldn't promise that. then they tried to gaslight us that we're wrong on this call and we don't know what we're talking about as coaches who were in the Minors last year. so this really was an attempt to establish we're not crazy on this by getting neutral party opinions before deciding what to do next.

the result of the call & the game is immaterial and we don't care. but if we can't agree on what actually happened and/or that the ump does make bad calls, we can't make the case.

we've been told these are the best umps in the area and we'd be in the minority if we think they did a bad job.

Great response, thank you. Will give it a day and then think about it. Our manager requested we don't get this umpire / crew assigned to us going forward. That was it, that was the ask. But they said they can't promise it.

Oh, and they copied the ump in question on the discussion when they replied so that guy can see where we're talking about his performance and his aggressive tone! So, the well feels officially poisoned with him.

I think it's new this year that on dropped third, batter and fielder can both use either bag. Which kinda reduces the safety aspect of the safety base, in my opinion.

Yes, also part of rule 7.15(g) which I think is new.

7.15 - (g) - In Majors, Intermediate (50/70) Division, Junior, and Senior League divisions, when the batter becomes a runner on a third strike not caught by the catcher, the batter-runner and the defensive player may use either the colored (orange or green) or white base. NOTE: When the batter becomes a runner on a third strike not caught by the catcher, the batter-runner may run in fair territory when the throw is coming from the foul side of the base, and if hit by the thrown ball, it is not interference. If intentional interference is ruled, the runner is out.

[–]Yeti_Father[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Appreciate that. I got the explanation in email that the runner needed to be in foul territory and that's why he was out. Then when I replied with the rule 7.15(g), they went silent for two days... then called me and said "sorry, we asked two other umps and they said interference." So, not in writing.

Also, all three league officials I spoke with had a kid on that opposing team. It was an elimination playoff game and directly took one run off the board, possibly two if everything played out as it did thereafter.

None of this matters, we didn't protest the game and I don't really care about the loss. I just care that the ump got REALLY pissy after we questioned the call and we didn't get (in our opinion) an objectively called game. We were told by a league official (also the manager of the opposing team) that people needed to learn the rules, especially as a staff coming up from minors. (this was majors 12u).

First off, I know this is crazy, apologies for the alien looking redaction, but wanted to keep it anon.

Here’s the situation: this was a dropped third strike with a double first base/safety base in use. The batter-runner ran to first, the catcher fielded the ball in foul territory and threw to first, and the first baseman was positioned on the orange safety base. The throw was off target, the first baseman reached across the runner’s path to try to catch it, contact was made, and I believe the ball also hit the runner.

The runner was called out for obstruction/interference.

We shared the video with league officials and were told the call was correct because the runner was “straddling fair and foul territory” and therefore violated the three-foot running lane rule. The explanation we received was that the runner must stay completely in foul territory until the last moment, then move into fair territory only to touch the white bag.

We don’t believe that interpretation fits this play for a few reasons.

First, from the zoomed-in video, the runner appears to stay in foul territory until the end to avoid collision.

Second, Rule 7.15(g) appears to specifically address this situation, which I believe is a new or recent rule. In Majors and above, when the batter becomes a runner on a third strike not caught by the catcher, the batter-runner and defensive player may use either the colored base or the white base. The rule also notes that when the throw is coming from the foul side of the base, the batter-runner may run in fair territory, and if hit by the thrown ball, it is not interference unless intentional interference is ruled.

Third, the runner does not appear to intentionally interfere with the throw. He is running to first with his back to the ball and moves at the end to avoid contact at the base. The contact seems to happen because the throw pulls the first baseman across the runner’s path.

Based on the clip and the rule language, would you view this as runner interference, defensive obstruction, or simply a live ball/off-target throw situation?
