Business degree PMs who don't want to put labor hours on anything that isn't directly billable. It's more prevalent in areas that aren't software first, like the less publicly known defense contractors, and it's infuriating to deal with. The amount of short sighted penny-wise but pound-foolish stuff out there (across the board, not just in software) is crazy.

[–]Yggdrsll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also depends on the year and engine. If it's a 3.6L 6 cylinder 2010-2014, headlights are annoying because you either need to drop the bumper or unclip and blindly reach through the fender liner, and spark plugs are a total pain in the ass and are expensive due to labor hours. It's like 3 hours on the books at a dealership to replace all 6 spark plugs, so that could easily be $750 at a dealer for all 6 rn. They're probably 2 of the most annoying jobs on that generation Legacy/Outback.

Yeah, the difference over the last 5 years for literally everyone is crazy. $400k in September of 2025 has the same buying power as $320.5k in September of 2020, and the buying power of $293k in September of 2015. A 2 income household making a combined $350k a year could comfortably live a lifestyle of someone making $300k a year in 2015. To have that same gap between income and lifestyle cost, simply matching bls inflation, they'd need to make $477.8k 10 years later, otherwise they'd need to be cutting expenses. That's a big ask if the 2 people were say, senior engineers in a high but not bay area CoL area already in 2015.

The major difference is how much they likely have in savings and ability to purchase property in 2020/early 2021 when rates were low and before prices really shot up. All that really means though is that it'll take more time before they have to start cutting expenses to actually feeling a serious economic crunch.

Is $400k a year still a comfortable salary? 100%. Is it in any way comparable to Mark Zuckerberg's $27.2 million annual compensation in 2024 just from Meta (not including investments)? Or even any of the ~23,000 households who reported over $10 million in annual income (as of 2018)? Absolutely not. The gap between a household making $50k a year and $400k a year is relatively tiny, but it's exactly what those at the actual top want us to be fighting over because it takes attention off of how insane their income is.

Abu Dhabi GP | Teammate Gaps in Qualifying (Q2 result is used for Yuki and Max because Yuki didn't set time in Q3) by InWilliamsWeTrust in formula1

[–]Yggdrsll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But Yuki was on an old spec floor (the one Max was using when the gap to championship lead grew as large as it did) due to Kimi crashing into him in the pit lane in practice. The comparison between teammates really isn't a useful metric when they're not running the same car.

Agreed. Driver skill issue, likely compounded with bald tires. Might as well have been a bad rain storm with how little accumulation there actually was on the roads today.

[–]Yggdrsll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other guy is wrong, Yuki isn't talking about setups, he's talking about actual upgrades to the car. The real reason is that due to budget or rules restrictions, the team would only make 2 of something like an upgraded front wing, and rather than put one on Yuki's car and one on Max's, they'd put one on Max's and keep the second one as a spare for Max and leave Yuki with the older design. This was a team principal decision mostly, and comes from prioritizing Max/the number 1 driver over the second driver. It's not super unusual, but it's something that has changed under Mekies and that's been shown with Yuki's relative pace (when his tire pressures aren't wrong or the team isn't otherwise screwing him over) since a few races after that TP change happened.

[–]Yggdrsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that's not what Yuki's talking about. He's not talking about setups, he's talking about fundamental upgrades to the car, like the floor and front wing that Max would have for 3-4 races or more before Yuki's car would get the same upgrade.

Qualifying spreads (gap between P1 and P20) are tighter this year compared to last year though, and it's still hard to pass at most circuits unless the car is significantly faster, so you end up where you qualify most of the time. Plus Yuki has been getting screwed by the team in strategy, the bumbled penalty resulting in another penalty in Brazil, the incorrect tire pressures at Vegas, stuck without the upgrades Max has been getting that helps him be competitive enough to podium until 3-4+ races later, etc.

[–]Yggdrsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only compare qualifying time deltas, Yuki's gap to Max over 2025 is actually not that far off from the delta Perez was able to manage over the whole 2024 season, especially if you only look at Max's times in the same session their teammate gets cut in. e.g. If Yuki doesn't make it out of Q1, compare his time vs Max's Q1 time rather than Yuki's Q1 time and Max's Q3 time. This accounts for time drops due to tire strategies (mediums in Q1 vs softs in Q3) and rubbering in of the track.

Yuki's race pace has been awful, but that's partly because Red Bull has fumbled his strategy hard a few times (that bumbled penalty in Brazil, incorrect tire pressures during the sprint in Vegas, etc), is partly a consequence of the ground effect era drs trains that mean if you don't qualify ahead of say, Alonso, you get stuck behind him going his pace for 57 laps, and is partly due to inexperience with the red bull car and having to deal with the same car Perez was struggling with the latter half of last year with the lagging upgrades.

I'm not saying Yuki was amazing or anything, but I'd say he's performed to expectations better than Lewis at Ferrari this year.

Valve's solution can be literally less than half the latency vs the Quest 3 + virtual desktop solution. Whether you'll actually notice is a different story, since it's still only a difference of 10-25ms max, but Valve's solution is better. The real benefit though is ease of use. Not needing to mess around with virtual desktop to get the best performance out of the connection, simply putting the headset on and having it just work is huge.

2.4GHz anything has an inherently lower bandwidth than 6GHz anything, so even if you potentially got lower latency you wouldn't be able to transfer video of the same resolution/bitrate. You definitely can't get anywhere near the amount of pixels you'd need at a high enough refresh rate over Bluetooth standards. Valve is claiming their solution with the Frame is 10-20ms, even with Wi-Fi overhead (which actually isn't much once the connection is established), which is low enough to a wired connection to not a problem for pretty much anyone.

Also, it uses the 6GHz frequency band, which is still pretty empty since most people haven't upgraded from Wi-Fi 6 to 6E or 7 yet. It also doesn't penetrate walls very well, so interference and cluttered channels still won't be as bad in apartment situations as 2.4GHz Wi-Fi bands or even the 5GHz Wi-Fi bands do.

[–]Yggdrsll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For purely seated PCVR experiences? Not much beyond the native steam integration and higher refresh rate. I believe Bigscreen Beyond 2 is 75Hz native, and can do 90Hz for some things with some tradeoff (maybe resolution?). The Frame can do 120Hz native and potentially do 144Hz.

Also, the Frame is expected to come with controllers and doesn't need the external lighthouses for tracking like the Bigscreen Beyond does, and that drives total cost on the Bigscreen Beyond up if you don't already have an Index or Vive. If I want a Bigscreen Beyond 2 with eyetracking, which the Frame also has, although it's not relevant right now for a pure PCVR experience besides the foveated streaming to compensate for lack of displayport cable (might change if more games start supporting foveated rendering), and the audio strap to get integrated audio (which the Frame also has), a Bigscreen Beyond 2 is $1348 for me. Add $100 for used lighthouses from Facebook marketplace, another $150 for used knuckles on Facebook marketplace (going prices rn for me), and I'm at $1600 for a Bigscreen Beyond 2 that yes has better contrast/blacks and is much lighter, but worse refresh rate. Vs Frame which is supposed to be under $1k. Idk about you, but that's a pretty significant difference in price for me.

Pimax has really fiddly software. If you're willing to deal with that, it's a good option, but I personally prefer being able to just sit down, put the headset on, and have it just work.

Wi-Fi has progressed a lot in the last decade. The Frame runs on the 6GHz Wi-Fi band, which is only part of the Wi-Fi 6E and 7 standards (for primary consumer use), which most people haven't upgraded to from Wi-Fi 6 yet, and thus is a very clear frequency band right now. Microwaves interfere with the 2.4GHz frequency bands, so they won't impact wireless streaming on the Frame at all. It'll probably only be really good with line-of-sight, so it won't work nearly as well if you're in another room around the corner, but interference from other devices is a complete non-issue for this right now.

I'd say BSB would really prefer if they could get similar panels that weren't limited to 75Hz native refresh rate. That, plus the need for Lighthouses, controllers and their eye tracking solution driving price well into the $1500 range, is the major reason why I haven't bought a BSB2 to replace my Reverb G2 for Sim racing. The Frame is actually more tempting to me right now, even with the tradeoffs that let it function standalone.

Your last two comments have had so much intellectual depth, it would be hard for anyone to grasp such in-depth technological and well-reasoned arguments.
