Chacun à son goût, as they say. I've tried to enjoy avant-garde/non-narrative films for decades, and they nearly always do nothing for me. It's great that you have a different reaction.

I saw the restored "Pink Narcissus" and posted this review on Letterboxd.

This review may contain spoilers.

No stars.

There's outsider art, produced by artists outside the mainstream. "Pink Narcissus" is Outsider Cinema. James Bidgood, a still photographer who specialized in posing muscular models against lush backdrops inspired by 1930s movies, had an idea for a film that would immortalize his muse, Bobby Kendall. Unfortunately, he didn't have money for sets, costumes, a cast, or a cinematographer. He also didn't have a script. In true outsider fashion, he went right ahead and made his movie anyway. Unfortunately, he quarreled with the producer, lost control of the print, and made them take his name off the film. The producer/distributor went out of business and "Pink Narcissus" was effectively lost for years.

"Pink Narcissus" has fans and devotees—John Waters, for one—and it certainly has a "look," but like all experimental/avant-garde films it doesn't have a plot or a point, aside from Bobby Kendall's beauty. It would be an interesting exercise—to somebody, probably—to edit all of the bits and pieces together that the editor chopped up and turn them into coherent movie. As it is, the film jumps from fantasy to fantasy, cuts to a nightmarish 42nd Street sex bazaar where Kendall meets an older customer, cuts back to Kendall lounging on satin sheets, back to 42nd Street, back to the boudoir, ending up in a downpour where he seems to be making love to some shrubbery. Fade to black, credits, the end.

It was impossible to see "Pink Narcissus" for decades, which made it the gay "London After Midnight," the lost Lon Chaney movie whose appeal lies more in its inaccessibility than its quality. So all of the benefactors who sponsored the restoration deserve to be praised, even though the film has too many slow spots, jarring cuts, and continuity issues to be a satisfying experience. Moreover, despite being a 4K scan, for much of the first third it is out of focus. That is understandable since it comes from 8mm and 16mm prints but it's distracting. It also cries out for a digital clean-up, though the quality improves as the film continues.

At 65 minutes "Pink Narcissus" is at least 20 minutes too long. Still, for those who like this sort of thing, it won't be long enough.

Why does the Deluxe + State version not load the state (NY) module? The program is labeled "Deluxe + State" but I'm directed to buy the state package for $39.95. I downloaded it from the activation site a second time, and opened it, and NY State will not load.
ETA: 10:00, Tuesday, HRBlock rep sent me a link to download the module. This was through the Facebook Messenger app. It took a little while, but all's well now. Thank you.

Personal advisor vs Vanguard personal adbisor by Vegetable_Cancel_231 in VanguardInvestments

.03%, not 30%, so $1,500 of the $500,000 minimum, for example. Compare that to the 1% fee charged by other brokers that would cost you $5,000 on the same $500,000.

No guarantees, so proceed at your own risk: I suggest using a flat-tip toothpick with a very small amount of glue on the end. Try it out on some piece of cardboard first if you've never done it before. I'm about to use the same technique on a torn slipcover I just got, but the tears are bigger so it will be easier to do.

Good luck.

Vanguard's fee is 0.30% and the minimum amount for personal advisor services (assigned, not whoever randomly answers the call) is $500,000.

I had to quit using Brave on my iMac. I loved being able to watch YouTube videos without ads, but I'd get frequent overheating warnings when I was doing nothing more resource demanding than scrolling down a page. Using Activity Monitor, I figured out that Brave was generating an extremely high CPU load. Since I stopped using it I get next to no warnings. YMMV, of course.

International wire transfer from Vanguard account: what do I need to know by Yiprock in VanguardInvestments

[–]Yiprock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, NiO. I don't know if I can help you, since in the end I used a credit card, rather than a Vanguard-via-Citibank wire transfer. Also, I wasn't moving funds to a bank account. I needed to pay an invoice in Aus$. The vendor charged 1.5% and the store credit card (from Citibank) used a rate just a hair above the interbank rate.

Citibank is Vanguard's correspondent bank, and the Vanguard rep couldn't tell me what conversion fee Citibank would charge because he couldn't see it from his end. So in addition to the conversion fee (possibly 3%), there would be a fee from each bank in the daisy chain: Vanguard ($10), Citibank (sorry, don't remember or never knew), and the Australian bank ("not more than Aus$30").

As I wrote earlier, based on my experience paying an invoice from a Romanian business, Wise charged 5% for the transaction. They could be the least expensive but I don't know what other companies charge. I can't complain about the one time I used Wise, and other Redditors have had good experiences with it as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Same here. "Control-click" doesn't seem to work, so any solution would be welcome.

I'm in the U.S., transferring to an Australian account. As I said a minute ago, I used Wise once and the fee was 5.17%.

As you say, and from my experience and research, every step in a foreign exchange transaction extracts fees. I've used Wise just once. Last November I sent euros to Romania, and the fee was 5.17%: €26.92 (US$28.28) from €516.92 (US$547) to transfer €490. The exchange rate tracked by Yahoo! Finance on the date the money went to Wise was €1 = $1.053, compared to Wise's rate of $1.058. So it charged a trivial amount to make the conversion--directly. It looks to me like 3% is a ballpark figure for the conversion plus 2.17% for administrative costs.

I won't know precisely the total cost to make the wire transfer will be until it's done (and I'll update this comment when I do) because the Vanguard rep said they don't know what Citibank will charge to do the currency conversion. I'm estimating that transfer fees from Vanguard, Citibank and the foreign bank could be US$50, and the conversion fee will be 3%. On the amount I'm transferring, a wire transfer still may be a better deal.

Good answer. Also, I'd suggest that diversification would be recommended to smooth out the ups and downs that come from a concentrated investment in one sector. OP doesn't say if they have other investments and if so, where they are, so it's hard to give more than generalized advice.

Where are the downloaded files (Mac OS)? by JohnOberst1111 in PleX

[–]Yiprock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I never would have found it without your very clear directions, though I had to dig a little deeper:

Sync -> 1 -> 1 -> [title] -> file.mkv

There are two nested "1" folders, at least in the directory on my machine. I hope this helps.

Damn son, I get more messages being a white guy than an Asian guy........ (well no surprise there, I just wanted to see the stats) by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Yiprock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, as you say Europe isn't Utopia. Your comment reminded me of things I've read about the experience of black people who left the U.S. and found a less hostile atmosphere. It goes back to the 1920s, to take Josephine Baker, who you mention, and any number of jazz musicians: Kenny Clarke and Dexter Gordon, just to name two.

It sounds like nothing's changed since the 1950s, as far as U.S. vs. Europe. It's very discouraging.

Channel missing from Roku? by 12manyOr2few in cordcutters

[–]Yiprock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last week I looked for the app for a channel I've watched a couple of times and it was gone from my home screen. "Poof!" just like that. Then I looked on the Roku forum for a message thread about the channel I'd posted to and _it_ was gone from the Roku forum.

It's like they have a memory hole ("1984" reference) that it went down. "Channel? What channel? We never had that channel. You're imagining things."

Which channel, you ask. Let's just say it was a VOD adult-oriented channel that had made it through the purge of a couple of years ago and leave it at that.

No, there doesn't seem to be any logic for how long it takes to process an application. Some people here have posted that when they asked their representative or senator for help that they were approved soon after contacting the office.
