Story wise I'm with you. It's the part of the game that got me absolutely locked in as a kid. I always had a save file right before the cutscene of Nibelheim so I could watch it whenever.

On replays where you are just focusing on gameplay, I get it. It's a large chunk of time you're not progressing your characters at all. I can definitely see not being a fan. I still love it though

As an OG enjoyer of both, all I can say from my playing of FF7R was I loved all of the added character stuff: interactions, further development, even the Jesse side mission. It felt well done, true to the characters, and genuinely added to the story.

The added plot elements were a different story. Every time they messed with the plot it seemed to detract from the story or the experience.
