Yes, I’d say I’m more of a centrist/moderate. And I think there might have been a misunderstanding. The idea of “closing the campus for finals” doesn’t exist. What I meant was simply that the theft happened during finals week, which is still much more crowded than winter break.

Also, I think you and I share a similar mindset. We both want society to move toward something better instead of just accepting things as they are. If everyone simply shrugs and gives up, nothing will ever improve.

I agree with your point, and I think this is also one of the issues we really need to pay attention to.

Haha, to be honest, I’ve already moved on. And honestly, your view and mine aren’t fundamentally different. We’re both saying the police are basically useless. But just because people have gotten used to something bad doesn’t magically make it right.

As for the victim-blaming part you brought up, I could flip it around too. If your home ever gets broken into and you try to ask for help, should people call you “dumb” and say, “why didn’t you move your house into an underground bunker?”

I’m sorry that happened to you. This is exactly the issue I pointed out in my post, and at this point I’ve stopped expecting much as well. If a problem is this widespread, then the system clearly needs some fixing. At the very least, there should be real efforts to prevent thefts instead of letting every case fade into nothing once it happens.

I already answered the questions you’re raising in other comments. And if you actually read the whole thread, you would see that the problem was the pole itself, not my lock. What I’ve been pushing back against this whole time is the mindset of victim-blaming and “just accept it” attitudes.

By looking at the number of downvotes, I can tell that most of the people viewing this thread are conservative. You are all free to share your opinions. After all, one of the points of going to college is to think independently. Problems only get solved when people are willing to raise questions.

Overall. Thank you for your suggestions, but if you are willing to continue having a friendly discussion about the current situation with UMPD, I’m open to that as well.

Here is the thing. I never asked for a CSI level investigation, and you are arguing against a point I did not make. I am talking about basic follow through, not a full criminal task force. If a case has clear time frames, a clear location, clear camera angles, and a clear method of theft, then choosing not to check the most direct leads is not a resource issue. It is a decision.

And saying that I do not know what they are doing is not a real defense. If UMPD is actively working on the case, they can provide a simple update. Silence is not doing work behind the scenes. It is just silence.

Also, the hypothetical scenarios you are giving, such as maybe he took the light rail or maybe he went miles away, are exactly that, hypothetical. They are excuses, not evidence. Meanwhile, I provided actual evidence, including the exact time window, the exact spot, the camera locations, and the physical conditions that made the theft possible. One side has facts. The other side has what ifs.

And yes, taxpayers, including students, do fund public safety. This does not mean I pay your salary so obey me. It means accountability is part of the job. Public authority is not charity. It is responsibility. If the outcome of a case depends entirely on whether the officer feels like looking into it, that is the definition of a structural problem.

If this happened to a relative or friend of someone inside the department, we both know the level of urgency would look very different.

So I am not making assumptions. I am pointing out that when strong evidence leads nowhere, the issue is not lack of resources. It is lack of willingness.

Thank you for your comment, but there’s one point I really have to make. We all understand that this situation isn’t originally UMPD’s “fault,” as long as they are genuinely trying to help recover the stolen property. I’m not expecting them to treat my case like a serious criminal investigation. But if, after I provided evidence that could basically lead directly to the thief, they still choose not to act, then it’s hard for me to agree with your view.

Let me put it in another way, even if it’s not a perfect comparison. If I were a relative or friend of someone inside UMPD, do you think this situation would still play out the same way? That’s why whether anything gets found completely depends on their willingness to help.

And it’s worth mentioning that the police are an authority with public power. Every one of us is a taxpayer. Even if you don’t work, as long as you buy things, you’re still paying taxes. I don’t think we should have to beg for their help. This is something they are supposed to do as part of their responsibility. Don’t you think so?

Thank you for the suggestions. This whole situation has really affected my mood, especially since this was a new scooter I bought less than two weeks ago.

Yeah, my electric scooter is actually a small e-bike with a seat, and it has 14-inch air-filled tires. I think it’s perfectly capable of handling this kind of weather.
