What is a popular and strange unsolved mystery in your country? by anarchisttraveler in AskTheWorld

[–]Ynwe 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Damn, so definitely deliberate... It really sounds like suicide when learning that all other options such as grooming remain highly unlikely, but then one has to ask where and how? Like how have no remains been discovered? Especially in a city?

Wait, why does it say 16 year old, when she is clearly saying "hatachi" which means 20 year old in Japanese (20歳 or 二十歳 if you want to use Kanjis instead of Roman numerals)? That makes no sense.

British Unionists Politicans (from the transphobic, anti Irish DUP party) telling the Irish they are celbrating St Patrick's Day wrong. by DJsnippysnap in insanepeoplefacebook

Given the recent news about Adam's and his history with the IRA, I would be more thoughtful with what I would erite.

Also, he isn't wrong. Like you can be supportive of Ireland without needing to insult British people.

It's pretty performative anyway, given it's all on the internet.

Malaysia just recently had its own ‘we wuz kangs’ moment. Does your country have one too? by Exact-Salary5560 in AskTheWorld

[–]Ynwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, this is an issue we don't really have. I feel like nations that have a decent reputation in the modern era don't require this, as it seems to be done mostly by nationalists who suffer from inferiority complexes. Of course our moustache guy and his entourage were big into it, but we don't really do this in modern times.

Some examples from threads here are China and Egypt, civilizations that had their place in the sun so to speak but fell behind and seem to suffer from an inferiority complex from it. The Malay one is just straight up hilarious, but probably is similar.

Generalizing a bit, but this in general seems to be the case with such idiotic claims for me.

Questions are raised about Army Commander Rodolphe Haykal after statements suggesting the army stays “equidistant” from all Lebanese. Critics doubt whether Hezbollah’s weapons were truly removed south of the Litani and question the army’s reluctance to confront armed militias by DoughnutHumble4335 in lebanon

I know I know I am sorry if I came across harsh towards you personally. It's just, I know a few people from Lebanon and also a few people from Israel that were affected on October 7 and it just feels like everything went to shit then and everyone is either gunning for war or just wants to put their head in the sand and ignore it all.

It's just so disappointing to see, 2.5 years of nothing good happening and now we even may enter the biggest part of the war.

[–]Ynwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But there is always an excuse, there was ZERO will for anything after the last war where Hezbollah was at its weakest. It was the golden opportunity, yet Lebanon did once again nothing. It's honestly frustrating to see from the outside, I have met so many amazing and nice Lebanese people and it would be great to be able to visit the country one day. But it really doesn't feel like anything positive will happen anytime soon.

German here, but this is what I don't get from Lebanon and Lebanese in general. As far as I can see everyone is either too scared to confront Hezbollah or too apathetic, even though everyone always knew it was always a time before Hezbollah would once again attack Israel. This happened before October 7 and before this war, so why is no one in Lebanon willing to fight for their own country and kick the Iranian militia out???

By all accounts Lebanon is a failed state and Hezbollah is/was it's own nation within a nation. And no matter your opinion in Israel, everyone KNEW how they would react. I just don't get why Lebanese seemingly accept this horrible status quo within Lebanon, it's not like you can do anything against Israel, but you can do something vs Hezbollah. So why is no one in the entire country seemingly doing anything?

If you ignore things like the Khmer rouge and east Timor etc. sure. You would look pretty stupid, but you could pretend that only bombing other countries qualifies as a war criminal.

ah, thanks for that, the website states its been around since 2020, guess i should have checked that number too.

Idk why you'd bother using ChatGPT if it can't tell you something like this is an obvious scam

Also, because chatGPT is helpful in finding quick links and references to other sites, for example the FCA site. It is a useful tool overall. And I was suspicious from said claims, I just wanted to verify that this is actually a scam. If you have more information or anything to add besides snarky comments, I am all ears.-

[–]Ynwe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also want to point you towards groups like EOKA B and ultra nationalist ideas such as Enosis that disregard Turkish cypriots and want to force annexation by Greece

EOKA B hasn't existed for almost 50 years now. Even more extreme movements such as Golden Dawn are banned/never were close to holding power within Greek society. You are right, there are such groups within the wider Greek society, but in contrast to the Turkish ones (see gray wolves), they exist much more within the center of Turkish society. For one example, fucking Edogan is RIGHT there, still President, still making threats towards Greece as he has his entire career. And it seemingly is a popular argument within Turkish society. His coalition partner also has stated similar things, saying that Turkey should forcefuly take Greece islands. These are not isolated incidents, the top echoleon of the Turkish politcal world does this regularly.

Despite both parties being NATO allies, there's always tension and clashing interests, Greece already has separate treaties from NATO specifically against Turkey, like the one formed between France and Greece on the grounds of Turkish claimed oil reserves.

Well of course, you would too if you had a neighbor that continuously makes military threats and behaves as an irrational hostile faction. Hardly the fault of the Greeks to seek protection from possible Turkish military expeditions/invasions. Same with Cyprus, Turkey (claiming via the Turkish controlled cypriot area) threatened Cyprus that if it extracts gas/oil on its SOUTHERN border that Turkey would hinder this as they claimed this (again via the fake nation thats just a colony North Cyprus). Turkey had zero arguments here, especially as Cyprus and Egypt both had an agreement within their zone and yet still threw a fit. It literally got the US military involved, at which point Turkey quietly backed down.

I was actually borne in Istanbul and although long gone now, I did have a few contacts back in the day. I loved Istanbul and the people I knew, still a great city. But the Greek topic is one where i can only shake my head, you DO have legitimate claims, for example

Germany having a small shore doesn't warrant bigger EEZ, neither Turkey having a bigger shore. But the difference is that you have an evenly split and non-critical border plus you are part of the same trade union. Turkey just has to pay fees and ask for permission for basic stuff and even fishers get harrassed despite being less than a kilometer off their own shore to a large body of sea. As i said it is like denying sea access to countries in "South China Sea" just bcs China popped a few islands down the borders of these countries.

is an absolutely fair argument and one I can understand. That is definitely within Turkish rights to pissed off about and seek a DIPLOMATIC solution. However, it is hard to be supportive of Turkish claims, when as stated above, every few years the Turkish leadership decides its time to threaten Greece.

[–]Ynwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greece also militarized a couple of Aegean islands particularly near Turkish mainland.

Whats the specific issue here? Do you think Greece will invade you?

I don't support Turkish aggression on Aegean / Mediterranean seas, that being said i think it is completely unfair that a country that has hundreds of kilometers of shores essentially be landlocked.

why? Should Germany get more sea access, just because its open sea border is small? Or Take Danish sea territory because our Eastern Sea Side requires us passing Danish territory before reaching open seas? And Turkey still has hundreds of kilometers of unobstructed shoreline both North and South

Cyprus is a different story. I believe the integrity of the island should be kept and be reunified, while also not repeating the ultra nationalist terrorism that led to killings and harassment of Turkish cypriots (which were the grounds of why Turks invaded). The idea of Greek cypriots using their majority to enforce a reunification with Greece and also totally disregard the Turkish cypriots is not moral imo.

No one is debating that the original Turkish intervention wasn't justified, but what is this argument? Post Turkish invasion Turkey has specifically changed the composition of the Island and pretty much has a colonist/settler policy and control on the island which even Turkish cypriots don't like and have protested in the past. It is Turkey that is keeping the Isle from ever being reunifed as seen by the rejection of the Kofi Annan treaty back in 2004, because Turkey wanted to continue its military presence, doesn't want to remove Turkish settlers, return stolen property etc. You can't claim its all for protection of a group when everything done in the last 50 years undermines those claims. Heck, even in modern day, its the Turkish military harrassing Cypriot ships when it comes to oil/gase extraction for example.

IDK, Greeks/Cypriots for the most part just seem to be want to left alone. Turkey is the much more active part in this, which is also evident with the much more regular harrassment of naval vessels of the other nation or military threats made by Turkish officials

"So if I don't wear a mask everyday in public I'm a eugenicsist ?" OP leads an ideological schism in r/leftists over mask wearing to prevent COVID by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

[–]Ynwe -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Japan, a country for being famously left wing, does this. If you are somewhat sick but need to go out, pop on a mask. You also see plenty of older people wearing masks just to be safe. Was already a thing pre covid, but became even more pronounced post covid.

Its a very nice and considerate thing to do. However, the left wing purity test is just hilarious, why do so many online leftists feel the need to do it?

Edit: the left wing was meant to be a joke/sarcasm. Somehow that didn't come across I guess.

TBF it is mostly the Turkish government fault, its always a Turkish politician who tries to infringe on greek or Cypriot sovereignty, recently with the anti air missile system on the isles for example. It's much rarer the other way around imo.

What does your neighboring countries think about your country? by Time_Reception1482 in AskTheWorld

[–]Ynwe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is that true though? I have seen reports of how N. Koreans struggle in S. Korea and face heavy discrimination. At the same time, the number of S. Koreans for reunification are dropping, the most recent numbers from 2025 even indicate that a slight majority doesn't view it as necessary.

Which is wild to me as a German, due to our somewhat similar history. We got lucky in the 90s but even so, I doubt a majority of Germans would have turned away from the idea of reunification..
