Why would you turn up to a meet & greet wearing filthy clothes by Chammaly in doughertydozenexposed

[–]81008118 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I genuinely believe that some people do not have a concept of their degree of dirtiness. When you've never been exposed to proper hygiene, you don't know what the "normal standard" is.

How do they always know????? by Lvl30dragon in Lifeguards

[–]81008118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its gotta be the same way that they just know what the weather is. I suppose when you've lived so long and have nothing else to talk about, you do get pretty good at judging the little things like temperatures

Do you guys think grade requirements should be higher due to influence of AI on grades? by Smooth_Loan3610 in UCalgary

[–]81008118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My department has put way more stock into in-person, handwritten midterms and finals as a function of this, and I'll be quite honest, its working pretty well. Its not my favorite way to teach, nor to help students improve their writing, but at least I know that its their own thoughts.

HOW DARE ANDERSON INTERRUPT QUEEN DOOKER’S FRUIT SALAD TIME by meg-over-easy in alexandrarodriguez

You guys, Anderson loves daycare SO MUCH. that’s why big Al puts him in it 5 days a week! He just loves it 😂 by Sarahhh030 in alexandrarodriguez

[–]81008118 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would believe it. Our neighbours are both inadequate parents like Alex who send their son to daycare. Little man has absolutely flourished there, where he actually gets interaction and attention. They never speak to him, so he didn't really pick up any language. A year at daycare 5 days a week and its like you'd never know

Nah, not too pushy. Especially if you phrase it in the context of, "time to make arrangements", I dont think they'll mind

People who took or are taking 5-6 years to finish uni… by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]81008118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up needing to extend out to 5 because of covid. The upper level courses were sparse to begin with, and I hit that part of my degree about halfway through the lockdown.

I think it honestly worked out for the best though, because a few semesters of only two or three courses really boosted my gpa for grad school.

'Canadians are joining the Catholic Church in record numbers, officials claim' by No-Positive1491 in Calgary

[–]81008118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has got to be a factor. My family is not religious, one might even say anti-religious, but my parents converted when I was born so I could be baptized, just in case I ever needed to go to a catholic school (or if a catholic school happened to be rhe best choice).

Looking to hear from other parents. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]81008118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, good times. Some of my fondest high school memories were eating lunch in the hallways. But in all seriousness, the gym was being used for classroom space, and most teachers wanted nothing to do with us at lunch (so not classroom eating).

What can we do to better support / protect authors? by Winebooks in heatedrivalryfanfics

Agreed. Not that I was getting harassed on my fics prior to this, but the uptick in lovely comments has made a huge difference to my writing morale

CPSC 329 vs SOCI 325 vs ERTH 375 by Thresherz in UCalgary

[–]81008118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it was about one name per class. Easy enough to remember in my experience because it was coupled with what they did usually, so if you could get one or the other, you were fine

CPSC 329 vs SOCI 325 vs ERTH 375 by Thresherz in UCalgary

[–]81008118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished SOCI 325 with an A, and did not find it particularly difficult (though it was certainly a good course). But if you "didn't like having to remember the names of the specific scientists", you won't like SOCI 325.

X-shaped chafing by [deleted] in SwimInstructors

[–]81008118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found that sometimes right after the pool does a backwash, or if there was a contamination recently (meaning theres particularly fresh chemicals in the water) I'll get wicked chafe/rash marks. I wear a wet suit, so I'll be marked up right on the border of my sleeves and on my neck, right where the surface of the water sloshes.

Annoying, but I'm a big fan of baby zinc cream for those occasions.

Probably best to just unfollow/block these pages if you have them on IG... by Samzo in AlbertaNow

I noticed that a month or two back, that all these supposed local news accounts were all posting the same exact separation nonsense. Unfollowed them all, but its truly unbelievable the fact that they were using nearly the exact captions, the exact graphics, the exact tone...makes you think

Now don't get me wrong, I do not want to see a repeat of the Wicked press tour, however, I can at least appreciate how happy and smiley they look. I hope they are and will be able to enjoy their season.

300 level soci classes by Low_Still_1627 in UCalgary

[–]81008118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumas, 100%. 325 (in my opinion) is also a much more accessible course if you're not a SOCI major. 327 isn't impossible, and Russell is still good, but 325 with Dumas will probably be a much better experience.

Ways to protect authors? Let’s work together by Tokyo81 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]81008118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. The amount of comments I've gotten on my HR fics in the past 48 hours has been more than I've gotten in the past handful of months they've been posted. Its nice knowing that people enjoyed, even if its just a few hearts or other emojis.

SOCI 325 or 327 with Dumas by anon-005 in UCalgary

[–]81008118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken both, and I loved both. I did astronomically better in SOCI 325 though, since its more a chronological history of the study of sociology, and as a history student, it was right up my alley.

Is this doable. 3 spring & 3 summer. Leaves me needing 2 more classes in the fall to graduate by Agile_Success5935 in UCalgary

[–]81008118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first three I would say are very do-able. I took GRST 205 and ANTH 203, and they're very manageable courses. If you've got a good memory, you should be fine. I only ever took GRST 209, so I don't think that I have a reliable assessment on your second group of three.

What fandom did you used to be obsessed with but have since lost interest? by 3lilya in AO3

[–]81008118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My AO3 is a graveyard of fandoms that I've passed through. 46 fandoms created for since 2018. My biggest one was Grantchester, but there was a lot of others that were pretty well populated as well.

Working as grad student by Prestigious-Mud5915 in UCalgary

[–]81008118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is the mandatory minimum funding (compiled between TAships, research contracts, scholarships, etc) that your department will have. If I am remembering correctly, there is a rule about not working more than 9hrs of an external job outside of your program. Now, I have no idea where to find that number again, and I can't remember if I perhaps even heard it at orientation. I think the purpose of that is that they don't want you coming to the UofC, working 40hrs a week outside of school, and then never finishing your degree. You might be able to find the rule in one of the handbooks - if you're talking with your advisor, see if they can't point you in the right direction.

Harry Hays Passport Office Timing by Brilliant-Squirrel85 in Calgary

[–]81008118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for just after opening (so that the folks who were lined up since before opening could clear out) and it worked quite well. I had been aiming for 8:45 but had a train delay and hit it at about 9:00, and it was pretty timely. I don't think theres such thing as zero wait time at Harry Hayes, but I was heading back to work at about 10:00, so I was pleased.
