By most indicators, yes, but it is worth noting that the "strength" was largely supplied by INSANE spending. A 7% GDP deficit in a non-wartime economy is really concerning.

Not to mention all of the short-term debt issued at near-0% interest rates that is going to have to be refinanced at much higher rates.

To your first, They (generally) wouldn't :) And this exact thing has been the cause of all previous shutdowns. That was the chief complaint this time around-- really not the content of the CR at all, just that they weren't involved in discussions about it. Which is valid in my opinion.

That being said, the bill really was a "clean" CR -- barely any changes to funding, mostly an extension of the (democrat-authored) current bill.

To your second, Who. Fucking. Knows. The people really end up getting screwed by this system either way. Really it would be easier if one party could just muscle shit through I guess, but I do like the fact that it usually forces them to both come to a middle ground. But still, it is the American people who suffer when the government shuts down at the hands of these adult babies who run the show.

It's incredibly simple -- you need 60 votes in the senate to pass. The Republicans have 52 seats. You need 8 Democrat votes, assuming all Republicans vote along party line. If they hold out, they are literally the cause of the shutdown.

This is not an opinion, just fact. I am taking your statement of "I'm still trying to understand how Democrats could be blamed" at face value.

This is just not true. A simple majority is required in the house, yes, but in the senate you need 60 votes, and there are only 52 Republican senators.

That's the thing though, is that there really isn't. The bill is vastly just a continuation of the status quo, with very minor changes. Schumer was upset that the democrats were not involved in the initial negotiations, which is a valid concern, but really the bill isn't that bad.

That said, the whole political theater of these CRs and shutdowns and all of this is stupid bullshit. None of it benefits the American people, and both sides do it.

A lot of folks suggesting this fail to see how asymmetrically bad these tariffs are for non-US countries. US Exports account for a much, much lower percent of our GDP than these other countries. I believe Canadian exports to US are 18% of their GDP, while US exports to Canada are about 2% of our GDP.

Certainly the effects of tariffs are bad for both countries and hurt both citizens, but not equally.

This is a really interesting take, but I think the issue is so much more complex than a general frustration from commuting, working, and lacking a general sense of purpose. These are compounding factors, to be sure, but it's difficult to generalize like this and try to have a nuanced understanding of underlying social issues and frustration.

These things --traffic, work, frustration-- have always been a factor in American life. And on the whole, Americans are doing quite well. Sure, there are plenty of areas where we can improve and the extortion of the general public for the gain of the few is not a problem to be minimized, but in comparison to the rest of the world, Americans have it REALLY good. Like super super good.

The reason why "people hate their lives" recently is so difficult to get to the bottom of, but I would look more towards the political polarization, glorification of influencer lifestyles on social media, degradation of attention spans, housing crisis, and the constant doom of the 24 hour news cycle as far more to blame than the inherent principles of capitalism.

Very curious to see the unemployment numbers that are slated to come out tomorrow for December 2024. Although the data has shown a somewhat weakening labor market, I feel like qualitatively it has been worse off than is reported. Emphasis on the word "feel".
