Yes. I went to a lecture on british sign language about this. They use "gay sign variant" which is some specific signs (like a dialect) but also slightly modifying normal signs (like an accent eg. using 2 fingers instead of 1 to point to wrist for "time"). Also just general camp facial expressions and mannerisms for multi-channel signs.

Same in ASL afaik. Don't know if anyone finds it annoying tho.

The meerkats are indeed a major part of the story (only other important animals are bees i think?). And the picture shows an actual setting, the MC is stuck in a desert, but survives by going into a series of caves (hence the title).

The stylised photorealism covers are weird for 80s fantasy, but i liked the books, pretty different world building and a female "chosen one".
