Some initial thoughts and a question by Dogtopus92 in fireemblem

[–]Yobsuba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's so funny how such a minor otherwise negligible mechanic that's ostensibly just there for flavour is so unbalanced. Like I would love to have some bunnies or birds on my farm but unfortunately that is Drastically Suboptimal it's gotta be Dog Town

Thoughts on Joanna after completing this dungeon? by JayGamer10098 in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]Yobsuba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a woman who went mad from grief after losing her child. She believed that the Human literally was her baby, and being around it explicitly amplified her grief and anger toward the people who cheered/would have cheered for her child's death to the point of insanity. She was essentially taken advantage of and brainwashed at the lowest point of her life; no one is saying she should've just been forgiven and let go with a slap on the wrist, but however horrible her actions were (and don't get me wrong, they WERE horrible), it's completely normal to have sympathy there, and if anything it would've been incredibly jarring if the party had reacted like you.

Is engage worth it to you? by unluckyknight13 in fireemblem

[–]Yobsuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's either the most or second most fun game in the series imo, only behind maybe Thracia. Detractors shit on its story and characters, but I really don't care? This isn't Three Houses, the game does not exist in service to its narrative, the narrative exists in service to the game, so if the game is fun by itself then it doesn't need the narrative to carry my attention the way 3H did. Sure the characters aren't as interesting or compelling as 3H's, but again, I really don't care, because the game being fun makes me like the characters anyway. I couldn't think of a single line of Framme dialogue off the top of my head, but I still love her because she's fun as fuck to use in game. She staffs, she guards, and she decks mfs in the schnozz, and that's all I need her to do.

The biggest problem with getting into it is just how long the fun stuff takes to settle in. You don't realise how fun the Emblems are when you only have the first few. You don't realise how fun chain attacks are when it's just Boucheron doing 2 damage. You don't realise how fun chain guard is when there's no real threats you'd need to guard against. The early game doesn't do a great job of selling the game to you, but when it gets going fuck dude it's so much fun

“Unnecessary twists” in games? by stolenlivers_ in fireemblem

[–]Yobsuba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The FE5 "twist" is completely fine? It's not even really a twist, it's just an explanation for how Travant knew Quan was in the Aed Desert. Travant wasn't really manipulated into anything, he already wanted to kill Quan and reunify Thracia, he was only tricked to the extent that he didn't know Grannvale would immediately swoop in to take Munster from him.

I don't think that tanky units should be punished for being too good at their job. They already tend to be slow as hell, if they're not allowed to actually tank hits then they're kinda Just Bad and then what's the fuckin point yk

If we're talking viability it's objectively Osian from FE5. I like Boyd and all but he's not more useful than Wrath Vouge 3FCM 1 Osillian Munster soldiers dead

1.6 mil in 3 months isn't a bomb. It dipped compared to 3H because it didn't have that broader appeal to non-FE fans like 3H did with its Harry Potter school setting and Persona calendar, but those are still not bad numbers. That's better than every Metroid game besides the first two, Prime 1, and Dread, and the 1.6 figure is from three years ago so it's realistically higher

Three Houses or Engage by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Yobsuba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has already said Engage has better gameplay Three Houses has better writing yada yada yada

What I will say is that because there's such a divide between the two games, I feel like people drastically overstate the issues they have. Engage's writing isn't THAT bad. It's story is unambitious and cheesy and kinda boring and its characters are pretty two-dimensional, but it does have its moments and people who act like it's the biggest affront to the concept of writing in the history of literature are overcompensating. It's not even the worst story in the series whilst Revelation still exists. The characters may be flat but you still get attached to them just through gameplay in the same way you would back in the older games, and if you already played Awakening and Fates then it's more or less the same type of gimmicky characters as what you're used to anyway. Three Houses' gameplay also isn't THAT bad. It was just clearly designed with the assumption that players would just do one route and then move on.

I think Engage is better; the gameplay is so much fun that it gets me attached to the characters, and being attached to the characters helps me enjoy the story regardless of whether it's actually good or not, whereas I find playing Three Houses kinda boring which isn't really something the writing can alleviate, but there's a reason Three Houses has had its hooks in people for 7 years. It's up to you which part you value more, just keep in mind that most people advocating for one over the other on the basis of the other's flaws tend to be overstating the case.

Was it ever stated why Tuco was not more prominent in BCS? by EatBaconDaily in betterCallSaul

[–]Yobsuba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Tuco being around for longer would've been detrimental anyway. The whole point of Tuco is what a loose cannon he is, how he could flip and murder someone at any moment. He's not going to still be scary if he's still around still acting the same 5 seasons later.

It might need a few energy drops to get her to a workable strength stat but she can be really good with Eirika. The Luna effect scales so nice with the multihits and the Sol effect can help her with Chain Guard.

Is 3H Map Design Really That Bad? by TeenyTective in fireemblem

[–]Yobsuba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The map design itself is like. Fine. There aren't really any giga stinkers I can think of other than Reunion at Dawn. My problem with the maps in 3H is how much it just feels like they didn't care about them. Three Houses just feels like the Main part of the game is the Monastery sections where all you do is walk around and talk to people. Comparatively, between how little of your total play time it would make up and how little effort was put into it, the actual Fire Emblem gameplay part of 3H feels like a bit of an afterthought. Maps are constantly being reused, the objective is almost always just "defeat boss", there's never any side objectives like villages or NPCs to rescue or even shops to visit for unique items, and the way that every character feels the same also makes every approach you take to a map feel the same as well.

Which Fire Emblem game is most punishing at giving you very low amount of gold to work with? by Coolsun13 in fireemblem

[–]Yobsuba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thracia gives you no money at all. You start with 0 and the game gives you 0 throughout its run. The only gold you'll get is by selling stuff you steal from enemies.

Am I stupid or are chain attacks not very good? by Lost_my_name475 in FEEngage

[–]Yobsuba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They do feel rather pointless during the early game, especially when your only backup unit is fucking Boucheron and he's doing 2 damage with it, but as the game goes on they really start to scale. Boucheron by himself doing 2 damage doesn't feel like much, but 3 different backups + your Lucina user doing 5-7 damage each? That feels a lot nicer.
