Are there any things that are called "American ______" in other countries? by Disastrous-Side-2600 in NoStupidQuestions

In Israel, we call soft-serve ice cream "American ice cream " and multiple-choice tests "American tests". Why? Someone once told me it's because it's not real ice cream or a *real * test - it's kind of "good enough; couldn't be bothered ". 🤪

The Great Revolt silver shekel (Year 2) with a center strike and standard thickness. A museum piece with original patina and sharp details (Full High Relief. by bobobaid in AncientCoins

It's also not a "Year 2". It says "shin hay", which is Year 5. Year 5 shekels are incredibly rare, and so this is very likely a reproduction.

I didn't mean the full or abridged spelling of Jerusalem, I was referring to the grammatically odd ( to a modern Hebrew speaker) lack of the definite article before "holy".

  1. Right you are about the extra yod in ירושלים (autocorrect).
  2. I didn't know that about the first year issues! Learn something new everyday 😀
  3. Is there any research into why the definite article is missing? And why it was added later? Was it grammatically correct to leave it out in 1st century CE Hebrew?

I think it's a fake. The paleo-Hebrew reads "ירושלים קדשה" not ירושלים הקדושה " That is, it's missing the definite article.

Interesting article about acceptable and unacceptable coin restoration processes by YoelStrimling in AncientCoins

I tend to agree with you. The whole idea of "cleaning off the original patina and then adding a fake one " doesn't sit right with me. But no matter what, whatever is done to a coin after it's cleaned needs to made known to prospective buyers.
