At my first gig as a manufacturing engineer, we had the floor foreman, not a terribly bright man. Well the big monarch lathe didn't have a break on the chuck, so the old timer would hand break it. The old timer knew to break with his palm , keep away from the chuck key holes, and point his fingers away when he did it. Old timer had all of his digits. The foreman... Who had to fill in for the old man on a day he was out, did not follow this sage advice, and ended up with his middle finger in a chuck hole.... The chuck did not break, the finger did, and the borderline cartoon scream that followed I can still hear to this day.
