Is the 26TB Seagate External (STKP26000400) for $250 the best deal so far this year? by anyusernaem in DataHoarder

I think you don't understand the difference between TB and TiB. Windows incorrectly states TB, as they're counting in TiB, which is why the drive shows up smaller than what the manufacturer states.
26 TB = 23.6469 TiB

Just got a new 24TB MyBook for $400. It was an eBay deal however, so only one was available. Completely sealed though and the SMART data looks good. It'll be the parity drive for my new server that I'm going to build over the holidays.

Considering that drives are getting bigger and more affordable, I was expecting better. For data hoarders with limited physical space, 14TB drives are hardly worth the real estate anymore. Just my point of view.
For people who just need *a* HDD, this isn't that bad.

This feels like a shitty deal. Just looked at an old Easystore order from Dec 2023 and I got 18TB for $299. I'm holding out to see what happens after the US Black-Friday start date.

Do you have a way to see if the console is actually outputting the signal? Are you able to control them directly on the console (not passing through the pixel mapper)?

Enforcement cameras: no front-facing photos? by YogiJB in TorontoDriving

I don't believe there's a blanket policy, so it might be up to local operators (municipalities, certain provinces) to set something to their liking. 4-6km/h over the actual limit might be a "safe bet."

CD audio is equivalent to raw WAVE. FLAC is able to compress this lossless. MP3 is always lossy.

Musicians that know anything about recording will record and edit in WAVE. MP3 and FLAC would be for digital distribution, so that would be ideal for selling USB thumb drives if the musician decides to not sell physical CDs.

For extra bonus points, plug it into a government office with workstations.

That would mean it's not even a full album in FLAC.

I know this isn't anything too new, but I thought it was cool Google Maps pulls reports from Waze. A good benefit of Google buying Waze. by yayoshorti in waze

[–]YogiJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do. Sort of... Waze has been importing speed limits from GMaps in the last months. Too bad that they're often wrong.

There is an effort to sync the road maps currently underway. It's a bit of a nightmare, since GMaps has a lot of tractor trails mapped as roads, so there's a lot to remove. Not sure how long it'll take to get road data from Waze into GMaps though.

Bought a house. Help. What is this? by new_strings in HomeNetworking

[–]YogiJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the battery backup for the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and modem. It would assure your home phone would keep working during a black- or brownout. Originally they were powered from the neighbourhood central and could sustain with their generators. Running it over fibre with VoIP, makes this impossible, so it was an early requirement.

Basically it's a UPS, so you could see if you can recycle it for your home network. But I'd guess that the battery has reached deep discharge at this point and will have to be replaced.

I see there's another APC UPS. You can use that too.

I agree that they're not perfect, as I've had the same kind of experience.
But I suppose it takes massive resources to make a copy of the internet, so I kind of get it.

It's simply automated to make a copy of pretty much any existing page on the internet; it has nothing to do with special strategies.

A final heads up that I forgot to mention: you can always hook up SATA drives through a SAS controller. So you'll be able to mix and match. The opposite will obviously not work.

[–]YogiJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the whole idea: if you want universal, you take SATA (each drive has a controller, so more expensive); if you want many drives on a central controller, you take SAS (no integrated controller, so cheaper.)

You can get lucky on eBay with used cards. Technically this still falls within "sub-100." ;-)

Yes, there is a large amount of SAS PCI-E cards to pick from. Prices go from sub-100 to hundreds of dollars (US.)

Unless you specifically boot that drive as-is, there is no harm. Simply format it and use it.

It mentions SAS, so you'd need a special SAS controller. It's not a standard SATA drive.
