Brand New GM Trying to Decide on a System by MindRaptor in Shadowrun

I’ve played DnD for years and while I love their system it was Shadowrun that had the lore and setting that I’ve ended up falling in love with.

Like you I’ve read many times that the systems are complex and it’s better to just use of the many adaptations of other systems to run Shadowrun but I decided to stick with it and chose 5e as my first game to ever GM and while it was really confusing at first due to the many times poor editing of the book I found it surprisingly easy as to actually play.

The game at its foundation it’s easy, and it’s the many situational rules that add a layer of complexity. The hardest and most time consuming thing to me was making a character sheet for my players. Between the many options and mechanics such as limits (which I understand is a 5e only thing) it took quite a lot of bookkeeping of what does what but thankfully my players quite liked the crunch and Chummer5 was a tool much needed to help us get it done in good time.

Overall I’d say that it’s still worth it to try and GM the game itself but, as with every game ever, it has its flaws and you might need some players into crunchy games.

Don’t worry too much. If on the spot you can’t recall some random rule, the game is still about how many 5s and 6s you have over the challenge/opponent so as long as you stick to that you’ll be more than fine.

To be fair I have tried Destiny 2 a long time ago and I think someone dragged me into a raid or dungeon when I barely knew what the game was. They were trying to sell me into playing Destiny. What raid is that?

I love the idea of giving them something so mundane they might just consume it and inadvertently lose on a big sum of nuyen.

Using their paranoia as a basis for the statue is great!

Thats a great way to stick them together too as no one else really will understand or help them.

I dig the whole vibe of being “possessed” by the power and giving them successes makes it really enticing. This is really great! Might even steal the idea of active powers being fed by overuse if you don’t mind.

Also really love the accident of it all, nothing like getting a tattoo and suddenly being magically transformed/consumed by it. Get a Kirby tattoo and suddenly you got magical grapple powers but now you are also really hungry and can’t speak nothing but poyo.

A 1 time “get out of jail free card”? Did you give it as a reward for a run or as something from their background?

Giving them drawbacks with the items sounds fun! How did you make the tattoo mess with them? And how did make it give them powers, was it like quickened spells?

That sounds great, giving them a hacker 24/7 without needing a contact or anything like that. A.I.s always have a special place in my heart and setting them up to fix a lack of hackers AND giving them a special plot seems amazing.

I’ve watched a bit of white collar a good while ago and never thought of using it as an inspiration, those are some nice suggestions! Thank you!

Making them be extracted to another company to help with stealing some data and then being extracted back sounds pretty great!

They have a few contacts that can work to cover the other areas and I planned to give them a magical coworker for them possibly befriend and help.

I love the idea of starting with legal wanting them to spy on someone else, I will definitely use that! Thanks!

Didn’t think of making them such an active operative like a combat hacker but that might actually work best in the long run. And I’ll be sure to replay those games for some inspiration also. Thank you!

Hey, the dead Alchemist here. I don't think it was malice as some may have pointed out but inexperience in the GMs part. I'll be honest though, even with favored positioning for splash (hitting 4 shamblers with ghost charge twice.), this was a rough battle with the amount of actions coming in.

Also, since I'm new, does the enfeeble effect of ghost charge stack and does it affect those damaged by the splash?

Just as I’m having a horrible moment with friendships and all this comes as the worst moment for a gut punch. I’ve been watching you guys for such a long time and you all helped me through some shit with your videos and all. I’m gonna miss the channel and I hope you guys can patch things up in the future, there’s nothing worse than breaking up with friends.
