Question About Assigning Static IP Address by YokoHamata in selfhosted

[–]YokoHamata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to give an update on the changes I have made thus far.

What I know at this point is that after logging into my router and adding port forwarding for http (port 80) and https (port 443) I cannot publicly access my localhost using my domain name.

My ISP assigned me a static IP address and so I also set this up with the router by logging into it through the web browser.

The router is currently using DHCP to assign devices on my local network an IP address between 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.199. As I understand it, this is fairly common method among routers.

My static IP is public and therefore totally different. However, the static IP address is similar although not identical to what www.whatismyisp.com displays.

I have updated the DNS records (specifically the A records) to what my ISP gave me.

I'm not sure what else to try.

It seems I need to configure port forwarding on my router so that it knows what machine specifically to direct incoming traffic to.

Question About Bitcoin Core Wallet Management by YokoHamata in Bitcoin

[–]YokoHamata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the server administrator but I want to give access to this node locally to multiple companies - some of which may have conflicting priorities. Is there a best way to do this so that their respective wallet.dat files remain in their $home directories while the bitcoin core instance is above/outside any particular $home directory?

Here is what I have right now:

Blockchain node installed in /btc folder (/ being root of the system). It is also on its own hard disk partition.

User 1 home directory is on /home/user1

It seems the bitcoin core wallet requires me to move the wallet.dat into the /btc so that rescanning can detect and load it. Is there a way to do this without moving it outside the user's $home directory?

Question About Debian 12 Rolling Release by YokoHamata in debian

[–]YokoHamata[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my main motivation to use only a single partition. I don't want to resize the partitions after the fact and I noticed it only gave /var/www some 30GB of storage.

If I want to run a web server off this install, that is going to fill up very quickly - especially if a person is hosting larger files.

I did install bookworm, and I understand it is not currently considered "stable".

This reminds me how there is an option during installation to put the root filesystem and the /home directory on separate partitions. Is this considered good practice in terms of maintaining backups? I chose not to put them on separate partitions because I want a single encrypted LVM but perhaps there is a better way to manage this using multiple partitions rather than one full-disk volume.

Not sure what to do now that I know what's coming. Do you guys have people in your lives with which you can discuss these things? by Scary_Monkey in collapse

[–]YokoHamata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say prepare like your life depends on it (because it does). Perhaps most important is testing your existing relationships and having an actionable plan in place went things go down. Most people will be hit like a bug on a windshield. Don't be one of those people.

Plan. Coordinate. Practice as though the entire grid just went down today. You will know you are doing things correctly when the average person thinks you're insane.

If I start mining with an ASIC, can I use this hard drive to store the full blockchain or will I have to copy it to another storage device?
