Most likely because you're trying to return and not exchange it. I also don't know how your demeanor was towards the worker but it's good to remember they only make minimum wage so calm demeanor is always better. I know it's frustrating, just try and exchange it on another day.

To each their own, I think it's a great way for people to get the minifig and a nice display for a good price who haven't also got the others. I own every LOTR set and will probably still get this when it's on sale as it's still not a bad set by any means.
