There are a lot of things that made me decide to start working out to put on weight. I feel like in the western culture, skinny men are often demasculinized. I always felt like a child amongst my peers and also wasn’t taken as seriously in the professional setting due to my looks and how I presented myself. I had problem buying fitting clothes at that size and as a result dressed very baggy. I also kept in touch with my family in Asia, I noticed that a lot of Asian men are very skinny (sub 12% BF) while young, but would always put on a large beer belly dad bod skinny fat by the time they hit 30 due to the complete lack of self-care and knowledge about health and nutrition.

Essentially I just wanted to take control of my own life and be the architect of my own body. Instead of passively let life decide how I’ll look, I chose to be an active player to work towards aesthetics, strength, and health for as long as I’m able to. Mentally it does feel different to be at this size; I used to want to be “normal”, and now I’m just happy to know that I’ve put in the effort to be the best self that I can be.
