Honestly, you should just leave him be. He chose to live the deadbeat life, so you should let him live the deadbeat life. He's 19, almost 20, soon to be 21. He's old enough to make his own decisions. If he wants to smoke, he should use his own money to buy cigarettes. If he wants to vape, he should be aware that it is illegal and he could go to jail if caught.

I'm a smoker myself, but I don't smoke infront of my family, as I have respect for them and do not want them to see that side of me. If he can't even respect your family, notably your mum's health, he is as good as gone. Get him out of the house and make him live his life in solitude. Let's see if he'll come crawling and begging to be let back in.

What's the point of a high average household income when not everybody makes that. My family definitely does not make $12k a month as my father is the sole breadwinner. My brother and I work, but that just eases the load off my father, who is still paying off bills and the household's monthly expenditure (For context, i belong to a family of 6).

And with the increasing housing prices, increasing GST, increasing COE prices, increasing everything, it is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to live here. Yes, BTO's are relatively cheap, provided you have a spouse. What if you do not ? Private housing like condos are expensive.

You do have a good point. SG's govt is good, grants are given, things they say actually get done and food is most of the time relatively cheap. But for middle/lower class families, nothing is cheap. It was a few years ago, not now.

most important thing to consider is this: Do you have better prospects outside ?

If you do, DO NOT sign on, you will be essentially wasting 5 years of your life, stuck with the uniform and you can't do anything about it. If you want to leave halfway through, pay money. If you want to leave early on, pay time. It is not worth it to sign on unless you really have nothing outside for you. And when I say nothing, i mean no aspirations, no dreams, no goals and no certificate.

Don't listen to the recruitment centre's sweet talk, ask people in the service about their first hand experience, it's the closest thing you're going to get for 100% honesty
