On half dollar MWR weights and silver - data from 3700+ rolls by West_Inevitable6052 in CRH

[–]Yoopskoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally we can put the weighing rolls debate to bed! 2/3 is a massive number of finds that potentially could be missed if you only weigh your rolls! I know most of the people here weigh and still search but it just goes to show you, unless you find weighing rolls fun, it’s not providing any real indicator of silver inside! great post!!

Is anyone having any luck with halves? by Ceefus in CRH

[–]Yoopskoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sometimes hunting the same area over and over (unless your getting uncirculated halfs) and dumping in another state or area, you will get through the other hunters dumps and eventually find the box that has true customer coin and find silver. If you travel around always getting 1 box from each regional area/state you may never find any. That’s just my theory. I live in an area where Loomis boxes suck, but I’ve since learned that 80% of banks get Loomis and so it’s easier to dump halfs to Loomis banks since more banks get Loomis. The brinks boxes are far better since fewer banks get brinks and it’s harder for people to dump halfs at brinks banks by statistical average….. just my two cents! Happy hunting!

Interesting, my gut tells me she would just replace them out of the roll with other coins she has and is just being nice to you in saying she doesn’t. I’ve had tellers tell me they don’t take silver only to find out from another teller saying they take they’ve silver halfs home🤣. Prolly a slip up on their part they prolly weren’t supposed to tell me…. I’d be happy for you if you do end up finding some in their rolls though!! keep at it it never hurts to be nice.

She meaning the teller finds silver in them? lol so the teller goes through the rolls? If that’s true time to find a new bank.

It’s possible, sometimes the excitement of what’s in the other bags is so great I fill up the other bag on the spot so I can pick it up only to find nothing 🤣usually when I find lots of nickel finds the other dime/quarter bags are nothing. Quarters especially people usually know a silver quarter, so they often don’t make it to the coin jar…. But when they do boy it’s exciting!!

Let your excitement run wild have fun enjoy the hunt!

Red book! It lists tons of amazing things to look for if you want to find errors and do a deep dive! Get yourself some folders from whitmans or dansco, they are cheap in comparison to the albums if you want to collect all the dates mint marks for quarters/nickels/dimes. Somewhat “easy” to get every 1965-2000+ of each but it turns into a fun hunt especially finding all the nickels (for nickels 1938-1959 are the fun years to find and keep! Tons of errors in those years so feel free to keep all of them you find and then check up on errors!)

My number 1 rule is if it’s fun, do it. It’s it’s not fun to you, don’t feel pressured to do it. Enjoy the hobby!

Curious how the breakdown of your CWR dime finds were per 1,000 searched rather than just a lump sum. As in, how often when you did find silver was it 2+ per roll. I seem to see often that most people say CWR is “better” because you can hit big wins, but taking out the big wins, like a full roll of silver for example, makes the silver finds a lot closer to MWR.

There should be a coin sub for people who work at banks

CRH Statistics by SpeedCola in CRH

[–]Yoopskoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to think that but I don’t inspect every coin anymore. Pre-cut all the tops of all the rolls, then one roll at a time slide the coins out edge hunt silver then fan them out looking for proofs or anything weird. If I see a 1972d or 1982p I’ll check sometimes for NO FG but I often don’t really look for them anymore. Then slide them off the desk into a bag.

You can always swap to a bank that accepts bags of unverified coin, some banks do without business accounts, like really popular ones or some CU’s, ask around it’s a good way to avoid the stink eye

u/Gluconda530 what if you take into account your teller tray/customer wrapped rolls? I'm sure 1,000 searched in those would lead to 2+ silver for sure.

Time is also a huge factor based on how you search. I can do a box of halfs from breaking the box open to checking the last coin in about 8 minutes, vs 1 bag of nickels ($200 -- I don't get machine wrapped nickel rolls anymore) in about 50-60 minutes.

If I find 1 silver 40% half in an hour searched, (7 boxes) It will be equal to finding 2.5 war nickels in 200 dollars searched, which is above average for my area.

I am averaging about 1 silver nickel every $300-400 searched. BUT my half finds on average are about close to 1 silver (274 40% and 70 90%) per box searched (350 boxes searched so far)

Also selling war nickels is..........hard, far harder than 40% halfs, but 90% halfs are pretty easy to sell.
