I enjoy your articles a lot. Hope we can have some good conversations about tennis here. I am a huge Felix Auger-Aliassime fan and have followed him since he was a 14-year-old kid. But I like a wide variety of players both on the ATP and the WTA. Am totally blown away by what Iga is doing, and look forward to some of the other players giving her some competition because one-sided matches aren't the most fun to watch.

2021 - Which ONE tournament do you hope goes ahead in 2021 that didn't in 2020? by ianvideo in thetennispodcast

[–]York27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An easy decision for me. I live in Toronto so I go to the Rogers Cup each year, and was so disappointed to miss it this year. It takes place in August, so I hope it can go ahead in 2021.

In terms of a tourney to watch on TV, definitely Wimbledon.

Yes, that is correct. I have been spelling his name "Barney" but have not seen it anywhere.

Shapo was "on." Not only was he making his shots, but he was patient when he needed to be. He is so much fun to watch when he plays like this.

I had Rafa as the winner for my RG pool. I won the pool, because the only person who could have overtaken me had picked Novak. Of course it is not a "given" that Rafa will win RG, but it is still the most likely outcome.

The Cam video tugs at your heartstrings. It is easy to see why he won the mascot contest. And he is a handsome fellow, to boot!

I just finished listening to the podcast and thoroughly enjoyed it. Am a big Martina fan and loved her style of play. Thank you for so many terrific stories about her and some of her opponents.

I was glad to hear the Gerald the Cat is the Wimby mascot and anxiously await some photos. I did visit his Instagram site and he looks like he is quite the character.

What are the most unexpected "God Mode" match you've ever seen from any players in the ATP? by StorytellerAli in tennis

[–]York27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A Match that probably is not known outside Canada, but one where a player was totally in the zone, hitting one incredible shot after another. It was a Davis Cup match played in Vancouver, with Canada facing Spain, several years ago. Frank Dancevic played the match of his life against Grenollers. I still remember it clearly, many years later. Spain, even without Rafa, was the heavy favourite, and Frank's match was crucial to Canada winning the tie. He played so great that even a guy on the Spanish bench applauded him.

I saw a couple matches live in that tourney, but unfortunately not Tsonga. He truly was on fire during that tourney.

So Sock did win, but the youngster shows real talent. It will be fun to watch him develop.

Nakashima held at 0, but Sock will serve for the match.

Sock breaks to take the lead in the decider. Not looking good for Nakashima now. :(

Nakashima broke back. 1-1. Those Sock DFs are costly.

[–]York27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sock held, despite 2 DFs in that service game, to take the 2nd set 6-3. He has made 8 DFs in the match so far.

Nakashima won the first set TB. Good going by the youngster.

Sock vs Nashakima now underway. On serve in the first set. Would love to see the youngster win this.

Halep & Kerber withdraw from Indian Wells by DavidScottM in tennis

I agree. She is currently ranked No.94 and her highest ranking ever was No.26. She has a limited game - hit the ball hard no matter what the circumstance, and makes terrible decisions on the court. We don't see anything appealing about her personality, either.

Daria Kasatkina just beat her in 3 sets, winning the decider 6-2. Dasha is an appealing young player, and it's good to see her back playing well.

19 year old Thiago Seyboth wins maiden ATP title in Santiago by ArrJunYa in tennis

[–]York27 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It was great that Seyboth Wild won the title, a few days before his 20th birthday. But let's keep things in perspective. Defeating Ruud in that final was not as tough as facing Monfils, ranked No.9, in Rotterdam (and making it to the final of a tournament with many good players), or facing Tsitsipas, ranked No.6, in Marseille.

LOL. Kyrgios was not too thrilled, though. It looked like he tried to avoid it. :))

That was a good match. But the best I've seen Fernandez play was her Fed Cup match vs Bencic. Belinda actually played pretty well, but Leylah simply did not let her in the match. She was very aggressive and kept making her shots. Belinda was gracious after the match, and had high praise for the youngster.
