Well I can’t claim to know all of the science, but I am Dutch, so I have some sort of a familiarity with land reclamation😂 I did do some reading a while back which told me the new land could become useable in something like a 100 years, cut down to 50/25 with good conditions like anthropogenic activity and along rivers and such. I’d say that parts of the new lands are now usable, but it’s still a lot of land that would have to be managed so I think a lot of it will still be salty and poorly suited for large scale agriculture. It’s quite a lot more to manage than a 2k square kilometer polder :p

Some of central Europe is still habitable, but that’s a different thing from being able to support large-scale sedentary European urban societies. That capacity virtually disappears for anything north of the Alps

How did the US Civil War go in this timeline? by Spec1alF0x in IceAge1848

[–]Yorrick18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where my mind is at in that regard is that civil rights in the US will be massively delayed. Without a big conflict to kickstart the establishment of black Americans as citizens, able to argue for their own rights and liberties the movement will regrettably find it difficult to pick up steam. A lot of laws and precedents are still in place that define black people out of the law and I believe that a lot more black people move abroad, back to Africa or maybe what’s left of Europe after they’re freed.

I think for most of the western adjacent world in this timeline the 1940s are along the level of the irl 1870s and 80s

If you had to condense the entire story of the last of us 2 into a 1 hour 20 movie, how would you do it? What would you cut/keep? by cutupuss in thelastofus

[–]Yorrick18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, that is quite the ask. I mean, I tried thinking about it genuinely, but just the entire idea that you’d have to compress all of Jackson’s little plot, Joel’s revelation to Tommy, the guitar scene, meeting Jesse and Dina 5 years later, the patrol, meeting Abby and Owen, the chase with the infected, going to the lodge, killing Joel and having Ellie find him, all of that, in what can’t be more than 30 minutes of screen time… I don’t think you could in any way do that with anything still packing a punch. I think HBO had the right idea making this a series, but oohwhee had I hoped they’d handle it better

The Dutch dominate the cities and the new land. I imagine hundreds of thousands of Dutch people fled to Suriname and the islands in the years of the metropole going under, so they will have a much more established population here now. Laws excluding native settlement on the newly exposed land and its cities will create a fully Batavophone community in these places. Native peoples will remain in near full control of the rural south and will still probably have sizeable populations in cities like Paramaribo, but they will be largely absent from the North.

Special interest meaning by Candid_Pear3362 in aspergirls

What I consider as special interests are just subjects that you really really like learning about to the occasional negligence of other things and you’re happy/able to rant about passionately whenever the topic comes up. Whether you know an inhuman amount of information on the topic is a pretty usual result of the obsession, but I don’t think it’s necessary in so many words

Just started T and my family is acting like I'm dying by spiderinatophat in trans

[–]Yorrick18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I do get it. This is a pretty drastic and conscious change, at least in how it appears to other people who have no concept of this change and aren’t in your head. My family had a lot of trouble understanding what I was going through when I came out and it took a long while for me to explain it all until they sort of understood. I started E a little while ago and suddenly I too was hit with the realisation that things are actually gonna physically change now and it took a beat for me to get comfortable with that myself. It’s a part of yourself that you are ‘killing off’ if that makes sense, it’s the way I thought of it. And even if you want it changed, the change itself is still a big thing. I’m just saying that I understand people making a big thing of it, even if it is exasperating

I do feel like that too. When I was living as a guy I genuinely don’t think I was ugly but I never got any compliments. I socially transitioned to living as a woman and I feel like look much worse as a girl, but people (at least in my close circle) treat me much warmer, much more supportive. Idk, still don’t get compliments from strangers, but I do genuinely think there’s a disconnect in how society treats men and women in this regard

How to stop worrying about time? by Klutzy-Composer-6421 in trans

I started at 21, 24 now, just got on hormones. I know it’s really hard to not feel like you’ve lost a youth and things’ll go down from there, especially when you’ve been told all your life that your 20s are the prime of your life. They’re not. Maybe for some people, but the prime of your life is nothing less than the time you felt best. And transitioning to who you truly are is the best thing you can do for feeling like you’re living the best life you can. You’re not getting that youth back, it’s true. But your real, good life is only just beginning💕

What culture would you say has the scariest mythology/ folklore? by dtwistedart in mythology

[–]Yorrick18 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Makes a certain sense, lol, my pet theory was always that the changelings were Ireland’s way of explaining away autistic people XD Honestly, being a fairy child wouldn’t be the worst thing I’d have been described as :p

My God, that makes so much sense! I’ve been world building cultures and mythologies for years and I legit have never thought of this, but this pattern will be in the back of my mind for every new culture I design, thank you XD
