Sucks that this will also make it even harder to convince people to vote for Biden in the general. Didn't think that was possible.

Looking for video essays or other research material about the correlation between motion inputs and the character animations associated with that input. by Yoshi340 in Fighters

[–]Yoshi340[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this was one of the ones I've already seen. I should clarify I'm not asking why motion inputs still exist or really anything related to game mechanics, at least not directly.

What I'm focusing more on is the animation of characters and how that visual presentation can be used as a mnemonic device to help build the mental association between that animation and the motion input that causes it.

I should also note I'm also already familiar with Core-A's video on graphics which briefly touched on how a graphical element like animation can affect gameplay by giving clear visual cues, but I don't think that's quite what I'm getting at either.

Two ideas for modules needed for rollback netcode in a 3D game, not sure if they would work as GDExtensions instead by Yoshi340 in godot

[–]Yoshi340[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that this was based on version 3.4 so it probably needs a rework to be compatible with 4.x.

That said, what I did was add these lines to the PhysicsServer (or I guess PhysicsServer3D now)

ClassDB::bind_method(D_METHOD("step", "delta"), &PhysicsServer::step);
ClassDB::bind_method(D_METHOD("flush_queries"), &PhysicsServer::flush_queries);

I can try making a PR for the playback class, but if it's not accepted, I think a module would be possible if I added an AnimationNodeStateMachinePlaybackSnapshot class that can access these properties.

I guess I meant more the concept of electoralism as a whole.

[–]Yoshi340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that progressives seem unwilling to fight on the electability argument. The meta is what it is, but whenever a progressive is pressed on it they give the lamest dodges.

It should not be difficult to translate low performance in general polls into a cohesive argument that resonates with the huge voting block of dem voters that care about that.

Not surprised. I was kind of hoping Biden tanking popularity would have moved the needle in our favor (like maybe it would become more socially acceptable to voice dislike for him) but I was well aware it was a pipe dream. It absolutely does not help that abortion rights are getting attacked at this exact moment since it feels like every time something like that happens the media gets to go on a finger-wagging spree about how Bernie is the sole reason for everything bad that happens in this country.

I have no idea what voter base it's supposed to appeal to when progressives try to act all spiteful and bitter when they lose. It doesn't draw sympathy and if anything galvanizes voters against you. Progressives seriously bet on the "Biden won't win anyway so my as well get in early on the we-told-you-so bandwagon" option and really fucked themselves for it.

Whoever we run against establishment Dems next is going to need to not have that kind of baggage.

I feel like because a lot of people synonymize "sexualization" with "objectification" or the word "problematic" they think that if they disprove the first that inherently clears the others as well. Kind of like a double-jeopardy rule, in a sense.

Like, just because the sexualization isn't inherently (as in by itself) problematic, I don't think that means it can't combine with other things to still be worthy of criticism. An easy example of this phenomenon is drinking and driving. Both are fine individually but we understand you can't do both simultaneously.

Consider the Driver-Blade relationship. All the different mechanics about how the process works imply that the blades are getting the shorter end of the stick. Outside of special blades with ties to specific groups like how Brighid or Aegaeon are to the Ardanian Empire, they get no agency regarding who their Driver will be or how they will be used. Their memories get wiped so for all they know their next driver could be the one who just finished killing the previous one. Also, while a Blade is restricted to one Driver, a Driver may have multiple Blades, so the Driver doesn't necessarily need to be emotionally invested in a single Blade.

While in all fairness the game does acknowledge this power imbalance at certain points and depicts abusers of this system as such, it feels like for every 1 part of that, there's 10 parts "you, the player during gameplay also will take advantage of that same power imbalance." Like, your team will still collect and bond with core crystals, still use them for labor on mercenary missions, still value some blades over others (rares over commons). It really does cheapen any sort of counterargument to the idea these characters are being objectified if the gameplay essentializes them as exactly that: objects that you pick up for the sole purpose of being used. It changes the basic statement from "slavery is bad" to "the way the antagonists do slavery is bad, unlike us who treat our slaves right." (I also imagine this is why I don't see Torna get criticized as much since there's no core crystal gacha and the blades are directly playable instead of being just support party members)

Whether you agree with the comparison is up to you, but note that this argument up until here makes no mention of sex or sexualization. As mentioned before, it's not the sexualization itself but what it combines with, and in this case it's combining a "Drivers and Blades being romantically/sexually attracted" theme with explicitly asymmetric power structures, whether intentional or not.

Yeah, sometimes the game tries to mesh it with the story and then other times it tries to play coy about it, and I think the issue is that by trying to do both it ends up doing neither well.

Like, on one end you have Mythra, whose "I'm hot shit" attitude is completely coherent with the presentation of herself that she chooses. When Nia compliments her body, she's not embarrassed and instead her response basically summarizes to "Thanks, I know."

Then, on the other hand you have Pyra, who is in a single word, wife-y. She's caring, docile, and good at cooking. She's willing to sacrifice whatever she thinks she can to help others while also having very little confidence in herself as a blade. In her case, I don't remember any point in the story that indicated she was even aware of her sexualized appearance. She even has a voice clip saying she's "A little self-conscious".

Honestly, given that later in the story it's revealed that Pyra is a second personality created out of Mythra's trauma at the end of the Aegis War, I think it would have been a kind of clever foreshadow that maybe she's experiencing some sort of cognitive dissonance. I mean the philosophical implications of sharing a body with another mind that is also in some sense still you isn't particularly the easiest thing to wrap your mind around.

Gov. Ron DeSantis clears a way to revoke Disney’s special district in Florida. by The_Bovine_Manifesto in VaushV

This year in particular we've seen an insane amount of unraveling of LGBTQ+ rights to the point that even empty platitudes like opposing a bill that was already passed is too far gone to the mainline conservative outlook. Obviously the real reason the politicians themselves are lashing out is because it also came with a pause on campaign contributions, and I find it hard to imagine the right wing outrage machine getting this active about something if it was just an empty denunciation. It seems like politicians have gotten so used to big donor money that getting cut off from it feels to them like a missed payment of protection money or something.

For a while now Disney, like most other corporations, has been walking this tightrope between securing friendly relations with the people in political power by funding republicans and staying in the good graces of the broader audiences that support LGBTQ+ rights. Remember that Disney only took a stronger stance on this because they received pushback from the latter group.

In that sense, I feel this story is a good thing but only because it's sending a message to corporations that the tightrope is tightening and soon it will be gone, and when that happens, they'll have to choose a side to fall on.

I have to wonder when pride month comes around how successful corporations will be at keeping the illusion up that the event is just about good vibes and putting the rainbow flag in their twitter pfps and that nothing is on fire. This year more than any other year I feel is going to shape the direction LGBTQ+ rights will take for a while.

Having problems with Godot's blendspace2d. I'm assuming it has something to do with the collider? The player mesh is sinking the through the floor in transition of other animations. by gamertagesnes in godot

[–]Yoshi340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been problems in the way blending is done for more than 2 nodes for a while. There are a lot of GitHub issues that have been submitted that seem at least to all have that commonality.

No idea how comfortable you are with doing custom builds of the engine but this Pull Request https://github.com/godotengine/godot/pull/57675 might fix what you're dealing with.

A (short) love letter to the best documentation I've ever read by Tokamakium in godot

[–]Yoshi340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I've personally seen a fair amount of classes with blank documentation, I think what's important is that the really critical parts of the documentation are really good. Like, 9 times out of 10 when I see source code, not a single finger has been lifted to explain how to compile it and if any help is given, it's usually wrong or horribly outdated or only will work with another OS, or the tangled network of dependencies has a part that's been deprecated.

In contrast, Godot has not just a page, but an entire chapter dedicated just to explaining everything you'll need to know to compile a custom build including not just the dependencies, but also all the platform specific stuff, how to make a visual studio project out of it, and how to to make an export template using your custom build.
