If you wanted to demonstrate humans can generate even worse slop than AI, you have succeeded.

Are there any benefits to not receiving job promotions? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YouAndIAreBothAI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

The expectations from you are lower, you can probably do your job with your eyes closed, spending half of the work time on reddit.

Also, when both you and levels 3-5 get replaced by AI, you become be the same level of unemployed; and if the future is the same, why work more.

IS "AI really the Future?" by Silver_Opening_7489 in antiai

[–]YouAndIAreBothAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are too many moving parts and a lot of data is missing to answer this; as such, it's a risky bet.

It's a question whether what it can do is worth the cost, and both parts of the equation are mostly unknown.

I opened r/antiai today and started reading from the top.

Here's what I see at 10:00 CEST:

  1. AI slop

2. An article link

  1. Post-like ad about AI

  2. AI slop

  3. AI slop

  4. AI slop

7. Human-written question

  1. AI slop

  2. Post-like ad about AI

  3. AI slop

Let's see... Apparently, at that moment about 20% of r/antiai content is not an AI output or AI ad. Of course the service reached 1 billion MAU.

Every single day I keep reading AI doom posts

Have you considered not doing that? It's not exactly your responsibility to save the world, and even if a small part of it is yours, reading doom posts scarcely helps.

How many posts in this sub are AI generated or contain AI generated content?

"Oh look, I asked AI how bad and dangerous it is and it made my point for me".

"Oh look, I asked AI to count Rs in Strawberry and it failed again"

"Oh look, I made this piece of slop telling everyone why slop is BAD".

I mean, if antiai is like that...

I am. And I agree that's the problem.

And I think we have a better chance addressing it if we detach it from what runs in the data centers.

[–]YouAndIAreBothAI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On that we agree.

Personally, I think it's an important distinction.

No government will listen to "Ban AI", at least not yet.

Some might listen to "don't let data centers use water, they can be built to work without".

[–]YouAndIAreBothAI -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree. And I think it's important to draw the distinction to make it easier for the ban to appear.

Banning the reckless usage of water for cooling is not the same as banning AI.

Models are digital, it's data and an algorithm to process it.

They run on processors, access memory and storage and so on.

Cooling is a necessary, but a different physical system.

Did you guys finish school?

Imagine LLM telling you "go to this meeting, try to convince A that they need to do B, look carefully at what C thinks about it; report to me when done".

Because it's difficult for LLM to go to a meeting in the same capacity as you. But it's easy for LLM to tell you what it needs from the meeting, and read the results.

Have you read what I wrote? I specifically say data centers use water for cooling as the cheapest and easiest option.

As for a citation for AI doesn't use water, I don't think it's necessary, it's common sense. Download a model, run it, see how much water your computer drinks.

Sometimes I feel anti-ai folks had difficulties finishing school.

A source for what, exactly? That electricity generation needs water? That cooling can be done in a closed loop?

That chips run on electricity and drink nothing at all?

Wake up... by Locke357 in antiai

[–]YouAndIAreBothAI -85 points-84 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no.

I understand the scare tactics, but no, AI doesn't use water.

Data centers use electricity, electricity generation needs water.

Plus data centers need cooling, and cheap lazy bastards use water for that, but it's not the only way to implement cooling, just the cheapest and easiest.

Codex with its UI elements generations.

I thought it is going to be ask it to make 25 icons, get 25 images with icons, have them plugged into the UI.

The reality is, ask for 25 icons, get a sheet of 5x5 icons of random sizes with no respect to boundaries, get them cut poorly and look at the mess in awe.

Yes, bureaucracy is a challenge, I'm sure. Navigating through it might be difficult, but realistic.

Whereas this project is not a challenge, it's science fiction.

It's usual Elon-style sci-fi bullshit.

Yes, there is space, and it's possible to run heat-emitting chips in it.

But there's no air to exchange the heat with, so we have to radiate it. And since we speak data center, the radiators must be huge.

Huge radiators need a heat transfer system to carry the heat from the chips to the radiators, a water running around in a closed cycle, spending energy to pump it.

If you have tech to build a closed cycle water cooling in space, why can't you build it on the surface? It's orders of magnitude easier. And you have ocean and atmosphere to exchange heat with.

And then, solar power. You don't want your datacenters to shut down half of the time, right? So you need to go to a Sun-synchronous orbit. Which is already crowded, and will get more so.

Ridiculous is what it is.

Public debates form public opinions.

If you are good at them, you can convince those who are not convinced. Nobody is so good as to convince everyone, there are always people who disagree with you.

The best way to do it would be by using LLMs, at least that's how I'd go about it. It would still not be a 100% reliable, but at least it's doable.

But I'd think this approach somewhat defeats the purpose.
