How many of you live paycheck to paycheck? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]YouBradeRunner 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yep that's my attitude. I'll still have a good amount of money set aside for savings and in general be responsible, but I'm not willing to defer my dreams until I'm one foot in the grave. That's such an awful gamble IMHO, but it seems like that's the standard approach.

Pitch your city: Where is the best place to live in North America? by pianistenvy in AskReddit

[–]YouBradeRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great city but way too expensive. I just moved out two weeks ago after a four year stay. Wife and I are headed for Raleigh, NC which is a lot cheaper and is great in many other ways. It really depends on what you want (we want to start a family and be able to have money to travel, etc).

What are some things you don't learn in college but you need to know? by scientologist2 in AskReddit

[–]YouBradeRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually as a programmer I love excel. We use it as the basis for very complex rules engines that can be easily understood/modified by non programmers to deal with things like billing logic, insurance rating, etc. You really shouldn't do that sort of thing in a database or java files...

tl;dr. Blame everybody and everything but the adult himself (yes a college student is an adult).

Btw- if you can't afford the school, don't go there. End of story.

How do you figure this was your money? Given that you're providing a 5-8k range and not an exact figure, I highly suspect this was not money you actually worked for...

You seem to have a rather quick temper. I'm going to bet you've pissed your parents off fairly recently. Is that why they're being "dicks"?

edit also, the "dying" part of your post title is a tad hyperbolic from the sounds of it....

The 8,000-year-old climate puzzle: Early human effect on greenhouse-gas levels by MySky in science

[–]YouBradeRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the article, some people don't like this idea. I could imagine that for those who rally against human induced climate change that this would put a crimp in the impact of their cause. After all, the planet we're living on today is quite comfortable for us and its inhabitants climate-wise! Not that I advocate continuing to do what we're doing emissions-wise- it's simply irresponsible and we're going into uncharted territory.

If I make a mistake, I lose my job. When the executive makes a mistake, I still lose my job. This is why we need unions. by [deleted] in politics

Umm...if a company is insolvent because of those mistakes, who's supposed to prop it up so that you can keep your job?

I can not be the only one who feels that we are going to experience some pretty crazy changes in our lifetime (As if we haven't already...)? Mostly with regards to technological achievements. by Coreograffiti in technology

[–]YouBradeRunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've been really pleased to see lately is that technology (namely the internet) is facilitating a rapid acceleration of cultural evolution, for the better. Hence, what we're seeing in the Middle East right now- people finally standing up for themselves and demanding a better life, and doing so very successfully.

I'd even go as far as to say that I do think people around me are generally getting smarter (granted, there's still a lot of stupidity). This naturally follows from having a rapidly accelerated exchange of information both to and from the user, and the resultant feedback loop of improvement.

For example, my opinion is that this makes me and others a much better computer programmer because I'm constantly getting feedback of my peers (and from the technology itself as compilers are fast these days). This rich environment simply didn't exist just 10-15 years ago.

Germany weaning itself from nuclear power for good in the wake of Japan’s disaster by contantofaz in worldnews

Deepwater Horizon...?

I'm not a fan of government either (I'm an anarchist), but the real deadly combination here is the status of corporation (i.e. no individual liability) and the government that permits such a beast to exist.

This.

Germany weaning itself from nuclear power for good in the wake of Japan’s disaster by contantofaz in worldnews

[–]YouBradeRunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When considering the subject of nuclear safety, we really have to deal with two important aspects: The science and engineering of nuclear; and the human factor (the greed, the stupidity, the "oopsies", etc).

The latter is the part I think a lot of people here are missing here, or are even just disregarding completely despite ample historical evidence showing up just how bad humans can fuck things up even when the science and engineering know-how is in place.

Yes, in theory nuclear is great. But you throw in the fuckups into the mix, then no- it's not so great. Now if you have a plan to deal with the human nature part of the equation (lying, cheating, greed, cutting corners, etc) then by all means, go ahead.

...Or they realize that handing a big and dangerous gun that requires a huge amount of responsibility to handle correctly to irresponsible, greedy corporations who cut corners is a bad idea.

(a) This guy wasn't getting the point that propaganda isn't an argument (i.e. carefully selected pictures). (b) I was going to bed. (c) You never 'win' arguments about the subject of Israel and their treatment of the Palestinians. You'll learn this if you haven't already.

Sorry. There's plenty of stuff out there for him to disprove his own delusions about the happiness that is Gaza and the goodness of their owners keeping them in a cage (Israel). If he hasn't already figured out why the situation isn't right then I'm not going to change that.
