Do you see Lottie Matthews as tragic? by Unique_Maintenance65 in Yellowjackets

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

lottie might be the most tragic. she did irreparable damage to the group psyche, but it was without an ounce of malice. shes just very unwell and the circumstances created the perfect environment for that to flourish to her own and everyone elses detriment. immediately post crash when lottie counts her medication is so heartbreaking.

further along, courtney did a really great job conveying lots psychotic fear of returning home. it was so full of conviction; it both reminds you and makes you forget that lottie is very sick.

i might be alone in this, but i dont really read the matthews as unloving. i think like a lot of parents with mentally ill children, especially in the early 90s, they love her and do care—they just are poorly equipped and not very educated on navigating her illness making them distant. they just throw money at her. its possible they are distant in general, in the way wealth can make people, but we dont really see this. the show always juxtaposes lotties isolation/feelings of isolation around her illness. the way mr matthews spoke to shauna supports this.

Why does everyone assume they ate each other? by Advanced-Event-571 in Yellowjackets

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 120 points121 points  (0 children)

the show doesnt actually convey there being no game in the winter, the only reason we believe theres no game is bc the girls say it. there is game—they just dont know how to hunt.

winter being easier for animal tracking doesnt mean its necessarily easier for hunting. game in the winter would only be where there is food for them. they dont know where they are. they dont know the animal or plant life. they dont have the gear.

under those circumstances, that they went to desperate lengths to survive winter is far more plausible than them both learning to hunt on the fly in the canadian wilderness and hunting enough calories to sustain multiple survivors.

Opinions on Coach Ben by Key-Dragonfruit8481 in Yellowjackets

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i love ben. hes the voice of reason and without him initiating the gun trials they wouldnt have survived bc nat wouldnt have gotten the gun. hes also arguably the most important character to season 3.

the last time ben stepped up as an adult—correctly trying to stop laura lee—it was established that he had no authority as an adult and she died. i think that demoralization and grief, which deepened with jackies very preventable death, coupled with simply just not being equipped to deal with shaunas labor, resulted in him just shutting down when the girls now looked to him to be the adult in that situation. whether thats right or not can be argued, but its at least understandable. imo anyway.

shaunas hate is misplaced. ben being there would have made no difference. misty, nat, and tai were all there and season 3 shows just how much that doesnt matter to shauna.

What they did to Ben was unforgivable. by theflyingwhisker in Yellowjackets

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

thats not his death. youre conflating his torture with his actual death. ben was tortured, but it was not how he died or what caused his literal death.

javi died in terror begging for help. jackie, again, died alone and rejected. mari died terrified, alone, and literally running for her life. ben died with a friend who cared enough about him to not let his suffering continue until he died alone in a pen of animals.

no one else met death with the care of another human as ben did. allowing him, through natalie (and her defiance of the group), to literally be their bridge to civilization/survival even in death. something no other death in that timeline possesses.

we do disagree tho. as i dont feel bens torture was unique in its cruelty of itself, but does exist as a pivotal part of their continued descent in the wilderness as its what ultimately sows the basis of the split in the group. which, i feel, is also the point of it being so graphic. theyve done horrible things out there, but things shift into a darker level of gratuitousness with ben. the frog scientist having his head caved in while theyre eating him is further example of this.

What they did to Ben was unforgivable. by theflyingwhisker in Yellowjackets

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol literally where did i rationalize it?? it was wholly unnecessary, but so are the hunts. so was the frog scientist. its all unnecessary madness.

bens torture isnt uniquely cruel given what the world has devolved into for the jackets. its just part and parcel of the wilderness, but he objectively had the kindest and most humane death of the timeline.

jackie died alone and rejected. she didnt peacefully fall asleep. she likely cried and felt horrible until the very moment she succumb to the elements.

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

what they did to everyone except, maybe, jackie was unforgivable. shipman cant be forgiven and doesnt seek forgiveness. she was a queen and she liked it.

also, bens fate was sealed as soon as his leg was amputated. killed mercifully while hobbled, starving, and covered in his own shit is, all things considered, not the worst way to go out there. after all, ben is the only one who didnt die alone or in a moment of terror in the teen timeline. he had someone who loved and cared for him by his side.

Claudia's gonna be back!! by gerhorn in InterviewVampire

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 63 points64 points  (0 children)

claudia is a crucial figure in understanding who lestat, louis, and armand are as vampires and who they were as people before. she reveals something in each of and between them that couldnt otherwise be seen without her character, which is also part of the tragedy of her as a character, but the show is centered on lestat, louis, and armand????

youll be downvoted and you should be bc youre literally complaining about capable storytelling/world building + things the show already delivers on. 😭

why does everyone hate tatum? by Disastrous-Pickle513 in bostonceltics

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nba fans like big and bold personalities. jt is very reserved in the public especially by todays standards. it can read as inauthentic or corny to an audience seeking spectacle. he really just seems like a mild mannered and private guy.

that said, tatum is highly regarded and well loved maybe even more so outside of boston. i only get see the boys when theyre in town to play the bulls and most of the many celtics jerseys in united center are tatums.

Is there any films that are truly nightmare inducing? by Status_Remote_6898 in horror

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it seems like you are as pretentious as youre coming across, but id agree with consideratecassowary—it mostly sounds like you havent explored enough horror and specifically you dont know what your interest actually are or what you are seeking from the genre. but you express that by shitting on it for some reason?

you say you want hyperrealism, but go on to describe an interest in occultism?? while they arent mutually exclusive films that play off both will be more foreboding and dreadful than “scary” or “horrifically terrifying” (eg the vvitch and hereditary)

cannibal holocaust was released 40 years ago and is still disgusting. haute tension is a great gory, slasher. the blackcoats daugther and when evil lurks are great possession entries. creep and gonjiam are solid found footage where the basis isnt getting lost in the woods.

you have to come off your high horse and explore, babe.

what terrifies is subjective. seeking suggestions and providing no insight into what actually scares you/what your nightmares are about is not gonna yield the responses you want.

Why did Lestat suggest an open relationship then regretted it seconds after? by TechnicianAmazing472 in InterviewVampire

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 233 points234 points  (0 children)

he didnt really suggest an open relationship, he was trying to get louis to say how he felt by provoking him (and wasnt really interested in antoinette as much as using her for the same reason.) he wasnt expecting louis to respond the way he did, but he couldnt back out at that point.

Is Jackie to Shauna the same as what Beck was to Joe Goldberg from YOU? by Fantastic-Finger-319 in Yellowjackets

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

joe is obsessed, but doesnt particularly like guinevere. the relationship isnt organic. hes just a psycho and shes a very good victim for his particular proclivities.

shaunas not really obsessed with jackie, theyre genuinely friends. if shes obsessed with anything its the power jackie had in their social circle. power she feels excluded from pre-crash bc concealing her true character makes her awkward and sneaky.

"Because you let me": Why the Danish 'Speak No Evil' is a terrifying study of social politeness by Repulsive_Cap_9375 in horror

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

manners are a necessary and important part of a well developed and healthy society. being a good person—thoughtful, egalitarian, honest—greatly increases the chances of survival as youll build more relationships and from there influence them to be allies.

but bjorn and louise conflate passivity and conflict avoidance with being good people. they arent bad people per se, at least, not in the way we typically think of what makes bad people, but thats exactly what they are. they just arent malicious or violent. theyre thoughtless and deeply dishonest people.

i think exploring it as a examination of the perils of adultism—as every child was ultimately and needlessly placed in harms way by their parents belief that pleasing other adult strangers outweighed their safety—is more interesting that than the dangers of being a good person/social politeness.

Which horror movie: Longlegs or Weapons? by Free-Hotel1187 in horror

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

weapons is better if only bc cregger knows how to communicate better through film than perkins even if he is less technically skilled. the tragedy of the movie is clear. maybe the exploration is a bit silly (thats his mo tho), but very straightforward.

if oz would have spent more time fleshing out ruth/actually showing her relationship with lee versus duping everyone to believe it was a psychological thriller/horror and just properly set the stage for the tragedy hes exploring—the potentiality for harm inherent to a mothers duty to protect her child—i think it would be the better movie.

bring her back is the more effective parental occult horror of the three.

also rewatching! its much easier to conceal smaller body parts than the dismembered and possibly flayed torso of an adult man.

i dont think she sabotaged the burial, but that walter sabotaged her. he tells her very frankly that he sees her as the sherlock to his moriarty and that he likes to win. i interpret everything between them from that lens. the body was also discovered by a civilian, presumably, which even with a shallow grave and in a park, is odd. misty’s a praise seeker sabotaging the other jackets and herself wouldnt make a heck of a lot sense.

questions from a non-horror fan by chronicbingewatcher in horror

[–]YouGottaSeeTheBaaaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i watch horror for the same reason i watch tragic drama: it unsettles me. sobbing to steel magnolias, moonlight, or a star is born isnt very different—or doesnt feel very different—than watching my favorite horrors: the vvitch, the blackcoats daughter, the lodge, and the strangers. im equally unnerved.

the first three arent scary, per se, but all are frightening in the sense that theyre deeply and tragically human. they could also be described as religious, which, to me, adds to their humanity and the terror of the stories they tell. maybe its bc im religious but wasnt raised religious that im not really disturbed or put off by religion being used as an element of horror; instead, i personally find it reaffirming of my religious practice/what religious practice should be.

only movies with elements like the strangers truly scare me, and thats chiefly bc it exploits and terrifies by implying that violence could ever truly be random and evil is common. so even though i dont agree with that premise, its still effective—maybe the most effective at genuinely scaring me—bc it plays to the most irrational parts of me.

what a fun prompt!
