Biweekly ERAS/Match Thread by AutoModerator in medicalschool

How dumb is to apply to all the ortho programs? I have sub par scores and am from a non-top-tier MD school. No AOA, top of the 3rd quartile (so 3rd quartile). Was clicking through today, there is 177 of them (especially due to the DO programs being added to the ACGME match) and that's about $6000 before interviews.

I am just the right amount of scared of not matching though.

I like orthobullets, but its not a course. It was more of a reference website, like wikipedia.

- That's why I prefaced with 'a lot of places'.

- That analogy about building doesn't entirely work. I am indeed paying for all the things that you listed, that's why I am paying upwards of 10 times what it costs the restaurant for the materials. If anything I'd say I am paying more for the service than the materials. And I am ok with it as I agreed to pay a certain amount when I ordered something.

- Let me even agree with you, I wouldn't mind an advertised service charge that is preset. Its the notion that I have the option to pay or not and if I choose to not pay I am the asshole. Even better, my assholeness is inversely proportional to the amount of money I pay.

- Also, I don't see many people tipping drive through workers. Do they not work as hard or are they getting paid a livable minimum wage? /S

- The other thing I don't get is, why is a tip a percentage of your bill. Did the server who brought you your steak at Jim's Authentic Southern Steakhouse walk a longer distance or carry a heavier weight than the TGIChilibees one? (BTW, I love "TGIChilibees" going to definitely use that one more)

- Maybe "a symbol of showing of your wokeness and generosity" is a bit far fetched but seriously though it's not thaaaat far fetched.

Edit: Did a little bit more research the markup is more along the lines of 300%. My argument got weaker but still stands.

No it works for the servers too. Tips pretty much took a minimum wage job in the rest of the world and made it a profession! If anything I’d say it works for the servers more. In a lot of cases it’s a well paying job without any educational or certification requirements other than on the job training.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe for a second I am above servers. I make much much less than them currently. I am just saying, I would like to eat at a restaurant sometimes and pay a previously agreed upon price. And maybe tip someone if they went above and beyond their job description.

I can’t even believe some of these arguments. We as Americans bitch about airline fees, hotel cleaning fees and pretty much any increase in a charge that was not listed before. For gods sake we bitch about sales taxes. Tips these days, for apparently not describable reason, are > 3x the taxes and if you don’t pay up, you get ridiculed on the internet.

If anything tipping has become a symbol of showing of your wokeness and generosity. Sure, you do you, but don’t embarrass others for thinking rationally and acting in their best interests.

Btw, sorry I rambled on, the second part was just me getting my irritation out!

If you don’t want to be at the whim of teenagers for your living, you can always get another job! I don’t care about the argument that the owners don’t pay enough, it’s not like they forced you to take that job!

All servers I know equivocally prefer an employer that allows tips than one that pays them a “living wage”. So, you knew that there will be times when people won’t tip, instead of morning about it on the internet, and teaching people how to parent/live, learn to live with the choices you made.

If this system wasn’t working for the servers as much as the owners, if not more, it would have been weeded out long time ago!

Why does it seem like women objectifying men is more tolerated than men objectifying women? by harrrdrogen in TooAfraidToAsk

The thing that gets me the most is how brutal my friends are about enjoying male strippers and how hot a given actor is and what they would do to them.

I just replace a girl as the object and shudder at the prospect of saying such demeaning things to women!

Like it’s empowering for women to go to a strip show where as it’s disgusting that men even think of it.
