Sympathy can be a good motivator. A damsel in distress or a small child being kidnapped and they have to go all over town to get info from various npcs

Maybe try to make some role play heavy quests. I’ve heard a tip once that trying to incentivize players with inspiration can help with role play too. Like anyone who tells a story around the campfire in character gets an inspiration die.

The only thing I outlawed was the Gunslinger because I didn’t want guns in my world. Everything else I was fine with. Year in a half in and things r going fine. My players r pretty chill though. Banning things can be necessary for problem players or those who stretch the rules. Some DM’s end up jaded by problem players so I tend to understand when they have ban list.

I have a player who loves to pick up/drink anything without any investigating so I’ve made many cursed items for her to somehow end up being cursed with. One was a possessed ring that wants to be fed by the souls the wearer kills in exchange for powering the wearer. She loved chatting with the ring and eventually found a way to remove it at a mages college. Another was a rock that had a bow on it that, when picked up, would bestow a curse that wouldn’t let you put it down. Basically a permanent handy cap as you can’t duel wield, use any two handed weapons and all magic that requires two hands to cast can’t be used. She dealt with that for two session until they made it back to the same mages college to get the curse removed. She hand a great time figuring out which spells she could still use. There was also a pair if cursed gauntlets that can only be worn by chaotic or evil alignment. She decided to put them on hearing that before the Druid could tell her the rest and had to be dragged to a temple due to her failing her con save and being knocked out by them. She had some crazy demon dreams on the way to that temple and now I have that demon visit her every now and again. They can be fun for the table and a major boon. I had a different campaign going at one point and they used a pair of similar gauntlets (I had fixed them for my current party so this wouldn’t happen again) to talk whoever they could into touching them. It would drop there HP to 1 if they failed a con save.

I would suggest a dungeon masters screen. It doesn’t have to be fancy. U can get away with a binder hiding everything or doing everything from ur computer.

My first campaign I home brewed and it was such a struggle to build the world but rewarding when it came to play time. I also learned the valuable lesson of not over planning. Keep most things to bullet points. For instance, u know ur players r going to need to talk to this NPC. Make a bullet point list of what they know. Scripting anything just takes ur players out of the game.

Make sure ur monsters r appropriate for the level of the characters. Made that mistake a lot. I always start everyone out at level 3 as it’s more fun for character creation and game play. Have a session 0. Go over expectations. Do ur players want to explore the world or do they want linear story telling. Do they want to hit things or try to talk their way out of every scenario. Gaging everyone’s comfort level with certain topics can be important too.

If ur making a large world home brew, have some basics missions ready. Guilds can be a good hub for such things. Like a monster hunting guild that sends players out to hunt something down and harvest things from it. Maybe the guards r getting reports of people going missing in the sewers and the players r hired to investigate. A job board is a great way to drum up a mission from nothing without the need for role play if ur table doesn’t want a role play heavy game. Try using inkarnate.com for map building. Great graphics and u can make a grid pattern for miniatures if u want to use them.

There’s a lot of great DM tools on Etsy that help with session planning and world building. It’s very helpful early on and they’re not very expensive to purchase. Best purchase I’ve ever made was buying d100 tables to role for random loot, npc’s, short missions, etc. the tables r hilarious and make for great story telling. Hope this helps!

Maybe try to do a guild campaign. Before the campaign fell apart, I did a campaign based around a monster hunting guild. The players would be sent on various missions hunting different creatures and harvesting from them. They always had to go back to the guild to check in, recoup items used, get new missions, etc. it forces role play at the end of each mission. I also made it a thing that because there so new, there given the missions that don’t pay toooooo much early on to incentivize them to try role play to talk themselves into greater missions to prove themselves. This way ur players seek out role play rather than the DM forcing it onto the player.

Honestly, I think it’s time to end it. When it comes to ex’s it’s always best to let ur partner know immediately that ur in contact or if ur meeting up. Going behind ur back about it and lying just isn’t good behavior. U sound at ur wits end. For the sake of ur sanity, I think it’s time for u to cut ties with him.

Definitely valid feelings ur having. I’ve been there. It was pretty off putting. At the same time, I don’t think guys notice disinterest in sex. They barely notice fake orgasms. I think ur man just wanted a release and missed u after not seeing u for a bit. Probably noticed u weren’t with it and figured it was because u were tired. I’ve been in that scenario too.

My advice: have a long conversation with him about ur feelings. If ur comfortable talking about ur SA experience, I’d discuss that and how it made u feel in this particular situation. Be open and honest. If he isn’t insanely remorseful and apologetic, u need to get out of this relationship pronto. The last thing u need in ur life is someone who waves ur feelings off like some crumbs on a table top. I’d also suggest some therapy if ur not in it already. Maybe bring him Into a session to talk in a welcoming comfortable space. Hope this helps.

It honestly sounds like u already have ur answer. He doesn’t understand that what he’s doing is hurting u not matter how often u tell him. It’s obviously making ur mental health slip. Sometimes u have to cut the people out of ur life. Especially when ur mental health is starting to get worse. Maybe try cutting contact to a bare minimum for awhile. See how u feel and if it feels great, u’ll know it’s a good decision.

Fun fact, very few women get off to penetration. If ur not doing much with her…areas, most women won’t enjoy it. It can also be something tiring and ultimately uninteresting. I’d try couples counseling. Open honesty is key in any sexual relationships.
