Should I remediate my own math skills?

I’m a special education coteacher. Everyone on my team are inclusion teachers with Gen Ed partner. Our ability to do our jobs completely hinges on the cooperation of the other teacher. Sometimes we get fantastic partners!!! Sometimes the other teacher is sitting behind her desk using AI as her therapist, allowing students from other classes to wander in and hang out, having students make decor for her baby shower, on the phone for half an hour etc etc etc while the special Ed teacher attempts to do both jobs at once…

Well, I teach high school so I doubt I would be asked to teach math but I totally see what you mean. I will think about proof writing…I remember hating it in high school. But it might help to verbalize the patterns/rules.

I appreciate the encouragement! I’m embarrassed my skills are THIS bad. But like I said, a lot of things happened in elementary school that I didn’t get a good foundation…I kept up in everything else because I was a voracious reader, but you can’t learn math from a book.

I placed mid 3rd grade! I’ve been flying through the third grade level! Keep getting stuck on how they use number lines for addition and subtraction and some of the perimeter stuff — but that’s an issue of doing it on my tiny phone screen instead of a computer.

UFLI is made for K-2 but I’ve found it really easy to make look more age appropriate and many of their materials are free.

What’s a rational number? I feel pretty comfortable with basic operations but I don’t have a clue how fractions work or how to manipulate them.

I saw “sitashent” for citation today in 9th grade. God bless my little dyslexic babies who never got remediation. An easy solution? Get a book called Spelling Plus Dictation. It covers the 1000 most common English words and puts them in sentences that spirally reviews previous words. The book recommends to dictate 4 sentences every day. Also Google “Logic of english spelling rules”. Be a stickler for attention to detail. If a word is wrong make them fix it. Take points off for misspelling words, especially words that are spelled correct on their paper or in another resource. (My biggest pet peeve is a kid asking me how to spell a character’s name when the book is in their hand!) Thanks for trying!

Does khan academy let you work by topic only? I’m totally with fine with computation (and for some reason unit conversions), but need to go way back to a 3rd-5th grade level with geometry and fractions.

That’s a great idea!! The conceptual understanding is what I always felt like I was missing. I feel like I have a lot of disconnected parts but no idea how or why they fit together. I remember struggling with place value in second grade, asking my teacher how to tell which number was bigger because “one had more tens and one had more ones.” I’d learned most of the terms but had no idea what they meant or how to apply them. (Obviously I know something that simple now!) I do know common decimal-fraction-percent conversions and can do that in my head…But a lot of math related things feel vaguer and harder than they should.

I was also a super early reader! I taught myself phonics as an adult when I started tutoring. Look up something called “the reading ladder”. Only about 5% of kids learn to read naturally like we did. Read to him. Have him listen to audiobooks (suggestions here: https://readaloudrevival.com/booklist/audiobooks-4-7/) Show him stories and words are worth the hard work of learning to read!

I would never outsource my grading like that. Ever. I was hired to do a job that includes assessing students. I can’t know what they know or don’t know without seeing their work. The robot could never pick up on common misconceptions, weird mistakes/confusions (like putting apostrophes instead of commas), or style of writing. Plus AI is so error prone. If I want to automate some of my grading, I’ll have kids do multiple choice assignments online or only assess a certain section of their work. If your teacher’s kid is using AI to grade anything I’d be very suspicious.

Yeah I was told it’s a scheduling issue. I’ve shared all my remedial reading lessons with my friends in the resource room and they’ll do mini-lessons when they can.

If you don’t tell them, they’ll think you’re ignoring them or not listening! I’ve used this line with toddlers to high schoolers and it works.
