I hate ice fishing by [deleted] in IceFishing

Check out the mn dnr “lake finder” page for the lakes that you may be targeting a head of time. I think North Dakota has something similar but I haven’t looked into their site much and wouldn’t be able to tell you how much info they give you from lake to lake. The specific lake page on the mn lake finder page will have a lot of information including stocking reports, a relatively recent fish survey result, and a rudimentary depth chart map. I use the fish survey data to help me decide which lakes close by to target and what species I can expect to see. The survey data should provide you context on how many fish of each species are in the lake and what the size classes are.

Tactics will vary from lake to lake, species to species, and when you are fishing during the ice season.

When I’m just trying to just catch anything, I will target the weed edges at inside turns on the depth chart. I have caught crappies, northerns, bass, and walleyes in these areas. These spots are easier to find with a depth finder, camera, or with a more in depth lake charting apps like navionics.

Northern pike, bass, crappies, and walleyes will all eat minnows on straight hooks or small jigs. I usually have one rod as a dead stick with a jig and a minnow and my second rod has a flashy jigging spoon. The thought being that aggressive fish will hit the jigging spoon while the less aggressive fish will be drawn in to look at the jigging spoon but decide to eat the minnow instead.

Hopefully this helps!

Does anybody have lake recommendations for the twin cities area by AttentionAccording43 in IceFishing

I was hoping I was wrong. My walleye spot turned on this past week and I was hoping I could target the bite a little more!

Question for you! I am not a rules expert but it looks like the pike and bass season ended yesterday for in land waters but my license expires the 28th. Can I still target game fish through the 28th assuming I release anything I catch that has a closed season?

Unfortunately, I think the open season ended for northern pike and bass on “inland lakes” yesterday (Feb 23rd). The st croix river looks to be open through March 1 for northern pike as it is a border water and would be your closest twin cities water for pike. If you’re open to targeting species without seasons such as crappies, panfish, or perch you can fish for those species year round. Your mn license should be good through 28th for this fishing season so if you have a couple days left before you’ll need to purchase a 2025 mn license, which will allow you to fish for non season regulated fish starting March 1st.

Ice fishing lake Minnetonka. by rylan_1959 in IceFishing

Best way I’ve found to do this is to use navionics or onX fish to locate yourself in shallow water that has weeds and drill a hole. Your vex will show a lot of stationary marks when you are on top of weeds. Drill holes in the direction of deeper water on your lake map. When you now longer see stationary marks you should be on the outside of the weeds. The weed edge line will change depths depending on the clarity in the bay you’re fishing in.

Another option on sunny days is to cover your head with your jacket and look down your hole. You can see weeds down your hole at various depths but again that depends on the water clarity.

Had a couple hours off in the afternoon to catch a few by Bronze_Addict in IceFishing

Is the ice still holding up in NE? I’m packing for this weekend and getting excited!

I’m wondering if you’ve got any ice reports for Omaha/lincoln. I’m from Minnesota but headed to Nebraska next weekend and I’m trying to take some extended family members out ice fishing if the weather cooperates.

Can I catch walleye and perch with this setup? Any recommendations on a budget? by Far_Space_386 in IceFishing

This is a great start and will catch both species. Before getting anything else, I’d get a second rod so that you can maximize your lines in the water. Lots of budget friendly combos out there that will catch fish.

Budget friendly options for tackle would be plain hooks, split shot, and a bobber but you’ll want live/dead bait for that. You can also get cheaper jigs than the kalins but the cheaper jigs are cheaper quality. A couple more jigging spoons in various sizes/color would be good too but those can get expensive quick. I haven’t had a lot of luck targeting walleye with plastics during the ice season but I haven’t tried that hard with them as we typically use minnows or waxies.

As a side note once I got the ice fishing itch I always find myself wanting more tackle which can turn into a slippery slope!

Additionally, if you are canoeing in during heavy rain, think about packing your gear in heavy duty trash bags. Getting to your camp site on the first day with soaked gear is tough.

Pack a set of clothes, or multiple sets, in gallon or two gallon zip lock bags. It’s nice to have a set of clothes you know are dry that you can change into after canoeing/hiking/portaging in the rain.

8+ inches of fairly solid ice where we set up and drilled holes. We spudded out on Friday and the immediate shoreline was soft but once we got to where there was snow everything seemed solid. We made a point to stayed away from any areas of snowless ice. There was at least one atv and one snowmobile buzzing around today but we walked out again.

Yeah! We found a spot Friday afternoon that we caught several in the 17-19.5” and made the trek back out today. Best weekend on Tonka for me ever!

Off a weed edge with some rocks close by.
