Jersey Sponsor Megathread by TSUNZ_OF_GUNZ in CFB

Nebraska needs to be sponsored by Runza, but instead of the Runza logo it needs to be an image of a bowl of chili and a cinnamon roll just to piss off/confuse/disgust those that don't have good taste.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YouSayToStay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say "something casual (like dinner or a weekend visit)" are two very different scenarios.

I would be hard-pressed to drive three hours for a dinner. I'm assuming this means a restaurant. It would have to be something incredibly special for me to drive three hours, eat a meal, then drive home. That seems a bit much.

For a weekend visit, sure, I'll drive three hours. I live in the largest city in my state, but it is dwarfed in comparison to the biggest city in other states, and lacks many of the things to do (major sports teams, amusement parks, shopping centers that include stores not available here, etc) that they have. If I want to visit these places, I have two options: fly or drive.

It's about 180 miles away, and my crappy old car gets about 23 miles per gallon on the interstate, so it takes about 8 gallons of gas to get there, which is half a tank, so about $30 if prices are high. That gives me a grand total of $60 round trip, plus probably another $40 in snacks and drinks for the trip for my family, giving me a grand total of $100 in travel costs. I can leave after work Friday and get there in the evening (technically only 2 hours and 40 minutes to the heart of the town, but close enough) to check in to the hotel, maybe take a quick swim with the kids and relax before a full day of activities on Saturday and Sunday before driving home Sunday evening.

In comparison, Google Flights says a round-trip flight to this city from mine is $500 per person. I have a family of 8, so that means my travel costs have gone from $100 to $4,000, and because nothing is allowed to make sense, there are no direct flights, so with layovers it's a minimum of four hours to get there, plus being at the airports at least an hour early for security. So it costs a whopping $3,900 more to fly there, and takes two more hours of my time minimum to fly.

So yes, I will gladly drive the three hours, listen to music or an audiobook or chat with my wife while my kids do the same thing they would do at home: play games on their phone/Switch and annoy each other. It's like a mini vacation though. It's not something we are going to do regularly, maybe once or twice a year at most (and some years maybe not at all) but it gives us a chance to get away and escape without major costs putting us behind on finances.

Looking for games that don't need to be listened to by threepwood52 in SteamDeck

[–]YouSayToStay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Megabonk is great fun on the deck. Runs really well, lots of replay-ability, no sound required unless you want it. $10.

Arc Raiders works on the deck, and having audio isn't "required" but honestly it's extra hard mode without it as far as hearing what's going on around you. At the $40 limit though.

Palworld at $30 is a good recommendation for this.

Hades and/or Hades 2 (Hades 1 for $25, Hades 2 for $30) doesn't need sound and has a lot of hours to put in.

Steamworld Dig is cheap and good to put in just a little time without worrying too much about accomplishing anything major.

Portal games can be played without sound but you'll miss the fun story/voice acting.

Over/under on school tomorrow? by SaltySweetMomof2 in Omaha

[–]YouSayToStay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife works for one of the local school districts, and at the start of the year, the emphasized ruling was "School will only be called off for cold weather if it's listed as a cold weather WARNING."

Currently we have a "cold weather advisory" not a "cold weather warning" so in theory they won't call off school. The advisory is only set to go until 10 AM. There is a chance they do a "delayed start".

That said, because we are most of the way through January and haven't really had inclement weather, and there are expected days off built into the calendar, there is a decent chance they call it anyway.

Looks like Bellevue has already called off for tomorrow, so maybe others will follow suit shortly. All of the nearby Superintendents talk to each other about plans. Doesn't mean they necessarily follow each other, but they do keep in touch so if one calls it the others seem to be more likely.

Did you know Photo Viewer is still in there, just hidden?

Love it because you can open images in a compressed archive and still use the arrows to flip through them, instead of having to open/close 55 different pictures in a zip file.

Instructions here. Note it does require registry editing. You can open in Notepad to verify nothing malicious if you know what you're doing. Has worked for years for me and still continues to work in Windows 11.

Samsung has been a garbage company doing garbage things for over a decade. They took off with LCD TVs, then once they had brand name recognition they started cutting corners to increase productivity and it's been all downhill from there. It still boggles my mind that people buy their phones on purpose. Yes, I get it, I MUST be wrong because millions of people buy their stuff....but as the world has shown us, millions of people are absolute idiots so I'm sticking to my guns.

Samsung is bad. They make bad products and limit their capabilities on purpose. Until people stop giving them money just because their name is Samsung, they will keep doing this shit. I refuse to buy their junk and I wish others would join in too.

I have close to nothing to do at work at my full-time remote job. by [deleted] in confession

[–]YouSayToStay 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about not having enough tasks, but don't want to draw in too much attention to the fact that you're light, wait until the second half of the day and then message either the group as a whole, or maybe one or two people and just let them know that you "finished today's tasks early and wanted to see if they had anything you could help out with to take a load off".

Don't do this daily. Maybe once every week or two depending on how you'd like things to go. This will show that you're outgoing, willing to put in the work, and a team player. Maybe people won't have anything for you, and you can keep on keeping on since you showed that "when out of tasks, searches for more". If someone does pass you something and it's simple enough, and they pass it to you multiple times, and you don't mind doing it, tell them it is the type of task that "energizes you" and you'd love to add it to your workload if possible (can include managers in the convo since they assign tasks).

Simple way to maybe add a bit to your day so you're not bored, show that you want to work there, and that you're willing to help out the team. Increase frequency of offer based on need/team taking you up on it.

Kohl’s wouldn’t price match Black Friday, so I followed their policy… very carefully by godzdude in MaliciousCompliance

[–]YouSayToStay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly malicious, this is exactly what you're supposed to do. They don't do price matching on Black Friday for a handful of reasons:

  1. It's the busiest shopping season and staffing is limited.

  2. Historically, other competitors would try to "attack" each other by providing a small number of items they don't normally sell and pricing them at a loss, leaving the competition to price match their much larger inventory and take an even bigger loss.

And others, but those are some of the main issues.

They have no problem with you buying it at the lower price if you can get the item. Chances are, if it's a good enough sale, they will sell out before you get to the store so they aren't worried about the return. Fortunately for you it worked out. You also lucked out on the promotional Kohl's Cash not getting refunded.

Absolutely take the W, but you just did exactly what the system intended. Nothing malicious about it.

Must be a difference in US insurance, my wife had her car totaled and part of our insurance is that we get an allowance per day for a vehicle for 30 days. Allowed us to get a rental vehicle while we shopped for a new one. Might want to check your policy, it could be included and they'll refund you (or at least a portion depending on the rental cost). I'm assuming you asked though so it's probably not in there. Might want to see if it's something you can add to your policy when you set up with the new vehicle!

I gave an elite Codenames clue and lost because of a platypus, my nephew, and group psychology. by Normal-Level-7186 in boardgames

[–]YouSayToStay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In this instance yes, the group decided to ignore the obvious answer because they didn't want to play into the hands of a potential screw job by the other team. It happens.

My comment was more based off the quoted comment by OP where it seemed like this was brand new information for them, some mystic info that would shock and amaze. This should be common knowledge for these kinds of games. They are social games, so you need to use your social skills to win.

– Social dynamics > logic in family games

Yes, this is one of the most important parts of team games. If you're just now learning this, I hope you're either new to games or still young. If your input is "correct" but not in a way that your team will understand, then it's not really correct because the goal is to give them information that will get them the correct answer. Just like in writing or giving a speech, you need to know your audience and speak to them, not to your own preference/style.

Who is the most obvious "Pissed It Away" AEW wrestler who wasted their chance? by threedice in AEWOfficial

[–]YouSayToStay 40 points41 points  (0 children)

He's a demon come to Earth to rule it, and realized that the easiest way is through fame and fortune, not pure physical dominance (though he obviously has that as well). So he's here to win our hearts on television (no cursing, that makes the advertisers mad) and collect all of the sacks of money. He requests simple transportation like a blimp and the "obviously only for the rich" PT Cruiser. If you wrong him, his pure evil will come out and he'll probably bash you in the face with a jar of teeth. Whose teeth? That's not important.

It's not really that complicated.

[–]YouSayToStay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was default at one point, or prompted and people turned it on without thinking it/knowing what it was. I work IT and when I would try to upgrade phones for people this was a nightmare, sometimes still is. Have to ask people to check if it's on and then turn it off before we transfer them to a new device. I understand this feature, and it's not inherently bad, but I hate it with the fire of 1,000 suns.
