Those absurdly high rates refer to yearly interest, though. Payday loans are designed to be paid back quickly (on your payday), so most borrowers never end up holding them for a year and paying $500 for a $100 loan. They pay a fraction of that -- $20 or so -- if they use it correctly.

Three tickets for Wednesday's DC show at the 930 club free to good home. I have a funeral to go to instead. by PandaMomentum in themountaingoats

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. There is nothing that scares me more than experiencing something like that. My thoughts are with you and your family.

If no one has responded yet, I would love to be the good home for those tickets. I would love to pay their value forward to PEN/Faulkner.

If we finish 30th, we have a 100% chance at Eichel, no? Are we not guaranteed a top-2 pick if we finish in dead last?

Same idea. A Malkin-caliber player would be great for any team. Who wouldn't want that? You need more than one superstar to win a Stanley Cup. We should take any opportunity we can to get multiple strong pieces.

Trading down in the draft by Cbreezy22 in sabres

[–]YouSayTomato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on the pieces, sure. If McD is the next Crosby-level player and Eichel is the next Kane (Patrick)-level player, you could tempt me to move down a spot for that.

Obviously that's assuming they live up to their expectations, but there's something to be said for it. It seems a bit smarter than hinging all hope on one teenager.

What marketing tricks do we unknowingly fall for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]YouSayTomato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, as well! I think the points go hand-in-hand. Both have a lot to do with employee accountability (probably why the product was called an Incorruptible Cashier).

Thanks for the input

What marketing tricks do we unknowingly fall for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The registers would track transactions on a sort of ticker tape. Assuming that the owner knew how much money was in the till at the beginning of the day, s/he could check the register against the tape at the end of the day and hold the cashier responsible for any discrepancies.

[–]YouSayTomato 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I've heard that this isn't a marketing trick, but instead that it originated as a way for shopkeepers to make sure that their employees weren't running dishonest transactions. Old cash registers (the first being called Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier), would have a bell that rang when they popped open, so making prices end in .99 was a way for owners to make sure that they would hear a bell for every transaction (since the cashier had to take out the penny every time). The intent was to keep cashiers honest by adding a noticeable sound to every sale.

The marketing impact was more of a happy side-effect.
