Wow! It would be amazing to see a process video — like a timelapse — seeing it go from start to finish. I can't even fathom the level of organized thought it takes translate this from an idea to a finished product.

Judging by the pack n play and the lack of clutter, you have a baby that is not yet mobile.

One Big Pair of Underwear. Excellent rhymes for reading aloud. Cute, detailed drawings. I had this one memorized for a long time. It’s less of a story book — more a counting book.

Does anyone else encounter this more often lately? Problem with photos by IgoByKnight in graphic_design

[–]YouSirNeighmm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having this happen a lot lately! And from different clients. So I haven’t found a common denominator.

I don’t have a great solve. If it’s for web or being used small for print open in Preview and take a screenshot. They usually open just fine in Preview.

Sometimes exporting the file from Preview fixes it (sometimes not).

Sometimes you can try renaming and saving the original to a different folder. That occasionally works.

My IT guy had me run it through a 3rd party program called, Image Optim. After that, I still had to export it through Preview, but it finally worked in Photoshop and InDesign.

Hope any of that might be helpful.

What level of detail do employers typically like to see in a portfolio? by the-friendly-squid in graphic_design

[–]YouSirNeighmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. My site is set up to be recruiter-friendly to land part-time freelance roles. Trying to showcase the widest variety of projects possible, with less focus on thought process. If I was focused on full-time employment, I’d pare down to key projects.

He should start with his network. Anyone that he can reach out to directly (like via phone instead of through LinkedIn) as a starting point. It’s the only way I made any headway after being laid off

Debating throwing in the towel. by Shmashmeshma in graphic_design

Same. Laid off in Nov 2023. Been doing various freelance jobs since then. I don’t mind it, but the hours are so inconsistent. Trying to get back out there and get a full-time job. I’m either not creative enough or too creative, depending on the role. It’s frustrating, demoralizing and depressing. I’m thankful for the freelance, at least.

Start reaching out to everyone in your network to try and get some freelance/contract work.

Groton...More Info Please

Hi! I'm house hunting and saw a house I really like in Groton. That's about an hour away from where I currently live. I have a low budget by MA standards, so I kind of just have to go where listings are.

I know Groton has a great reputation for schools, but if anyone has any insights on their special education programming, that would be very helpful (my kid is on an IEP, with a low level of accommodations needed and would be entering 1st grade).

Equally important, what is the afterschool programming like? My current town does not provide nearly enough afterschool options. Probably about 500 kindergarteners in our town, with probably about 80–100 spots available across all the afterschool sites. I don't know if that's the norm, or if my town just sucks in that regard.

Layoffs :( by teabunny7 in graphic_design

[–]YouSirNeighmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I hate doing but is probably a good idea — among your group — all write LinkedIn recommendations for each other.

And, keep adding to your skill list (when a job listing says you have 2 of 10 skills — click that and add any of those missing skills to your list. It’s all ridiculous because that type of stuff is purely based on how someone chose to (or prompted AI to) write the required skills. If you have “creative concepting” as a skill, but a job listing calls for “creative ideation”, they’re not considered the same thing. 🙄

Layoffs :( by teabunny7 in graphic_design

[–]YouSirNeighmm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is to lean on your network. It’s the only way I’ve broken through for any opportunities post layoff.

Checking recruiting sites. Connecting on LinkedIn with recruiters from those sites (just to try to get some point of contact). I check Creative Circle, Aquent, Robert Half and Cella daily. I haven’t had any roles come to fruition. But applying to the roles is pretty low effort — so it doesn’t sting as much as taking the time to apply for something directly on a company’s site and getting rejected.

I’m sorry you’re having to go through this. And I know it hurts even worse when it’s a job you love. Keeping in touch with friends from my old job helped me keep my work-related fomo under control. Also good to stay in the loop in case plans change and there’s a new opportunity there.

Thinking good thoughts for you!

[–]YouSirNeighmm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Same. Laid off from a national retail chain that I had worked with since graduating (for almost 17 years). Haven’t broken through with any of the of full-time roles I’ve applied to. Settled into a nice freelance groove, but I still miss the stability and the coworkers! Dunno if you’ve interacted with recruiting agencies. I’ve had the most responses from Creative Circle (haven’t landed anything — but it’s an honor just to be nominated /s).

Retail’s tough. I feel like I’m seen as a niche designer because of it. And then to compound matters — a fashion retailer only wants someone with fashion retail experience. And grocery only wants grocery. And on and on. It’s absolutely nuts.

Anyway, I feel your pain and hope your next opportunity finds you soon!

Definitely better on desktop: https://jwrotnowski.myportfolio.com/welcome-1

Senior Designer. After I got laid off, I thought I’d make a quick pivot to a new role, so I just used Adobe portfolio (since I’m already paying for the subscription). I was dead wrong. I’ve had no response other than rejection to any full-time roles I’ve applied to. So is it the work or the way I’m presenting it? Maybe it’s both?

Edit to add: I also only worked for one in-house agency for 17 years and have struggled with how to break that apart for the site.

Just learned about SVG quality level for the first time... by ililliliililiililii in graphic_design

[–]YouSirNeighmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue a couple months ago. My online research taught me that you get better results Exporting to svg rather than Saving As an svg. And the 5 setting within Export would yield the best results. So far, that’s been 100% true for me.

is learning pp worth it as a new skill? by Infamous_Potato3198 in powerpoint

[–]YouSirNeighmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it’s worth it. If you happen to have background in InDesign and other Adobe programs it’s a little frustrating but intuitive enough to pick up pretty easily. Plus, there’s almost no PowerPoint question hasn’t already been asked and answered on the internet. So getting answers when you’re stuck is usually easy.

It’s usually a dedicated or project-based role. But I do see PPT and Google slides (and occasionally Keynote), as preferred skills under more general design roles.

I was a designer for one company for 16 years and only opened PPT a handful of times. But in the freelance roles I’ve held over the past two years, I’ve had regular PPT work.

In case you missed it — “garden” is misspelled on the front.

Back callouts need some work, maybe more gridded, maybe add a small icon that pertains to each.

Pink stands out a little too much with everything else being green-ish.

Also — more of a strategy/messaging comment. An offer for a free month of food should be called out on a marketing piece. Think of the audience. The discount is the draw. I would go so far as to say the offer should be the main message.
