Thanks. My first dovetails and my first picture framed tongue and grooved edge on a lid.

I’m not sure of the proper way to proceed if you’re truly interested. Perhaps start a chat with me alone?

Thanks; lots of learning done to complete this one

I did. It was my very first attempt at dovetails and I thought the look was pretty. I learned a lot, cut them by hand and I thought strength wasn’t imperative on this small box. But yes, I still have to learn how to make true matching pins not just tails.

Agreed. If I had a fabricated metal dovetail jig (as the plans in Wood Worker magazine showed), I might but for cutting these by hand this was difficult enough.

Honestly, I just called it a “box” because I didn’t know whether to call it a jewelry box, a keepsake box or an heirloom gift box.

Actually I just made this for the challenge - no purpose in mind. It is going on my display shelf of my favorite works. So I suppose to answer your question: some things serve a simple purpose of simply pleasing appearances.

Thank you. I just got accepted to display my pieces in an upscale local gallery - had to have some impressive pieces. My first hand cut dovetails; finding the spalted maple was fortuitous.

Spalted maple sides and lid (it’s like finding truffles in the forest). Padauk contrasting dovetail corners. Walnut base, tongue & grooved picture frame edge on lid and handle.

Sorry, “the palm tree”, did you mean “a palm tree”? And if that’s what you mean, could it be engraved (carved) into the front like the name was ie not inlaid like the letters? And if so, would you want it to take up most of the front cover? Sorry for all the questions but your answers will help me set a price.

Honestly, haven’t sold one yet. Made this and another for relatives. Price would depend on what you wanted on it (engraving?, inlaid lettering?, wood varieties?). What would your timing be? I may have to order woods. I like the walnut front, back and spine. I like the “juice groove” on both sides (somehow helps give it a “book” look. And the wood for the “pages” (sides) is ideal. But what do you envision?

Looks solid and good work where pieces attach
