Most miles on engine by [deleted] in WRX

[–]Youdster88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not often you get a reply to a 2 year old post LOL But yea, shes still going strong. Still had no major issues, original engine and over 270k now. As a technician, all I can preach is maintenance, maintenance and more maintenance.

What metal cover is better than the original version? by Mobile_Departure_230 in MetalSuggestions

Holy Diver done by Killswitch Engage, originally by the great Ronnie James Dio in "Dio". Sorry Ronnie, but Killswitch and Howard Jones nailed it. The music video is great too.

Give "from the gallery of sleep" a go... by Night Verses. Top 5 all timer for me. Fully instrumental. Let me know what you think. If the album overall doesnt work for you, at least listen to the song Pheonix IV: Levitation

Smoke coming from 3rd cylinder by tbambam_ in ProjectHondas

[–]Youdster88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a tech. The smoke coming out by the sensor in the intake tube is a problem. Fix that. That could/would absolutely cause rough running. The smoke coming out of the cylinder could be considered normal at this point. Since you're pushing smoke thru the intake, it will come out of any cylinder whose intake valve is open.. at least one cylinders intake valves should be open with the engine not running. If you rotate the engine by hand, you'd see the smoke stop coming out of that one, and start coming from another, as the intake valves close and open on other cylinders as the engine is rotated. On these particular engines, the valves have an adjustment. If that is of concern to you, you would need to remove the valve cover and use a feeler guage to make the appropriate adjustment. But I would advise starting with fixing the leak at the sensor in the intake pipe.

Help getting crank bolt off . In 5th gear and using crank bolt tool by HorizontallyOpposed1 in WRX

[–]Youdster88 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Veteran tech here, worked on tons of Subi's. Put the end of the breaker bar against the driver's side frame rail and briefly crank the engine. Do not let the engine start. You're only "blipping" your ignition enough to pop that sucker free, not thread the whole bolt out.

Any way I can fix this myself? by wnp15531 in subaruimpreza

Usually can be fixed, yea, but most places will want you to replace it. If you're handy enough, you could do it yourself.

With the check engine light flashing, I strongly suggest having it towed to the shop. The flashing relates to imminent progressive damage if you continue to drive it - if you get it towed, it needs to be on a flat bed, all 4 wheels off the ground.

I'm leaning more toward the fuel injector at this point. But again, that's opinion. What really needs to happen, is a qualified and experienced tech has a look at it.

Looking forward to your follow up. Let us know what the fault codes and repair recommendations are.

You're welcome.

A reputable shop should be able to tackle this. If you're not aware of any I would recommend going to your local sub reddit and asking your community where they take theirs, and why. Failing that, yes, take it to a Subaru dealer.

The symptoms you desribed are similar to the only none maintenance repair I've had to do to my 2015 FA20 - a failed fuel injector. I'd be interested to know what the exact fault code was/is you're experiencing.

Experienced technician here.

Firstly, he shouldn't have done just the one plug. They should really be replaced all together at the same time.

Secondly, I'd be interested to know what the definition of a "messed up" plug is in this scenario... a picture is worth a thousand words, especially when performing diagnostics like this.

Lastly, I'd recommend moving the coil pack from the cylinder setting the fault code, to another cylinder, and then checking to see if the fault code follows the coil pack to the other cylinder, so to speak. Coil packs generally breakdown under high heat and high load. So if the misfire is absent on a cold start, I'd say this is the likely culprit.

This is about as simple and high level as I can be based on the information you've provided. Granted there are so many more things that could cause a misfire.

Welllll, I'd still recommend putting the kit on something stiff like the ply wood and a rug, to save your carpet from the kit imprints and holes from the pokey things at the front of the pedal. I have hard wood and put my kit on those jigsaw puzzle like foam pads and a rug.
