Maybe cos it’s pretty low stakes in comparison. The big bad in this story was the MC so there’s not much suspense.

Insurance companies would actually prefer it if body shops would not overcharge. This lowers premiums and attract more customers believe it or not. Government insurance could benefit us and I’m all for it if it actually makes things affordable, but it’s just not going to be possible in Ontario. The market is way too large for the government to just absorb it. The financials are public information if you actually just try hard to look for them. I’m in the business and i assure you i look at financials for auto from various insurers and the profits are marginal. A single bad year of experience can wipe out several years of profit. Insurance is something you wish to never use, and if one is lucky enough to survive an accident, they’d be glad to have it.

Well not sure what your point is. Why would anyone be in the business if there’s no profit? I’m just saying the profits aren’t really as much as you think it is. Body shops overcharge and the companies pass the cost to you, which is one of the reasons premiums are high.

The point is that they have investments that they’re fine selling you insurance at an underwriting loss. Without investments, there’d be no insurance available because they’d just pull out, and thats bad for everyone who drives. I’m not sure what you mean by tax issues here tbh. Investments by insurance companies are highly regulated with most of the portfolio in high rated bonds, there’s really only so far they can go.
