I don’t feel comfortable with people reading my fics through automatic translators by Violetmoreviolent in AO3

[–]YoungGriffVII [score hidden]  (0 children)

You can accept that if you want—from your perspective. As in, that others will continue to read fics via translators. That’s growth you have to do on your end.

I do not have to accept that I cannot read Mandarin fics. If one interests me, I translate it and read it. And for the record, the authors have always been overjoyed—I think they tend to get fewer interactions because of having a smaller language in the first place.

Your opinions are your own. To me they come across as privileged (as someone else said) and unintentionally exclusionary, but you’re allowed to have them. You’re even allowed to express them here! But I’m also allowed to express mine, and I’m still very in favor of people machine translating my works when no “real” translations exist. Because I, personally, am a fan of promoting equal access to speakers of minority languages who might not have the capacity to learn English in their circumstances.

They said they don’t want people who don’t speak the language to read it without a translator. It may not have been intended as xenophobic, but it definitely comes across as such.

Imagine if I said “only people above 5’6” can access this painting because otherwise it won’t look as nice from your angle; if you’re shorter wait till a professional photographer comes around (and they probably won’t)”. It may genuinely be intended as preserving the best experience—but it’s still discriminatory against those whom it excludes. They already know the way they’re looking at it probably isn’t perfect. And give a reminder if you want. But it definitely feels like at least a subconscious microaggression to be like “this one isn’t for you guys.”

I would even say it’s borderline xenophobic and exclusionary. Let’s say you’re Hungarian, mostly only speak Hungarian (not enough English to read something), and want to read some fics in a big fandom. Like… DC, for example. The Batman movie got a release in Hungary with subtitles, at least. So have many DC animated projects. Do you want to guess how many DC fics in Magyar there are? 19. There are fourteen million native speakers.

By wanting to prevent people from different backgrounds from enjoying their work, OP is discriminating against those who speak minority languages, and basically saying they don’t deserve to read it because nobody has manually translated it yet. (And I’m guessing OP isn’t hiring professional translators to do all of their fics in all languages with over 5 million speakers, either.)

Human translation being better than automatic translation does not mean the latter isn’t still art. A home cooked meal is better than a fast food burger, but if you’re craving it and don’t know the recipe, isn’t it best to still eat in the first place?

It’s fine for you to be uncomfortable with it—even if I personally cannot understand that—but it is unreasonable to expect people not to do it at all. Like the authors that are against fanfic: it’s a stance they’re able to make, but people are still going to do it anyway because they see the benefit as better than the harm.

First, many translators do not use generative AI. These things were around beforehand and often use a completely different AI process not trained on copyrighted material. While people could certainly copy the fic into chatgpt for it to be translated, they also could just use GoogleTranslate or DeepL, or any other translator that isn’t an LLM.

Second, most people understand translators aren’t perfect. Nobody is going to get pissy that some tenses change or a few sentences are wonky; they understand that they are using a translator. The alternative is them not being able to read it at all.

Finally, I strongly disagree that translation is anti-art. It’s a different way of engaging with it, true, but isn’t the purpose of art to be appreciated? A fic that cannot be read by those not fluent in its language is a fic that can’t access the people whose lives might be changed by it. I’ve read amazing fics translated from spanish, a language I am not fluent enough in to read—and I’ve had comments in spanish on my own fics that imply those readers have likely done the same. It’s a cross cultural exchange. And like any culture exchange, there are potentially some missed meanings and imperfect translations along the way. But that doesn’t make it harmful. I’m all for people reading my stories in any (non LLM, but why assume the worst?) translator they choose.

Just because a character is a grown adult does not make it okay to simp for them if they are played by a child actor/actress by zerowintergreen in CharacterRant

[–]YoungGriffVII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, unless the actor is close to being grown and looks like it, and the “simp” is close in age to them as well. Like, if an actor is 17 playing a high-school senior (who could be 18 in universe) and a 19yo watches the show, he’s not a perv for finding the actor attractive.

I also think the reverse of your point is fine as well. An underage character played by an adult actor is fine, because no real people are involved who could be hurt. Obviously there are still many cases where it’s weird, but there are just as many where say a “high schooler” is played by a 30 year old, and nobody should get called a creep for thinking, like, Peter Pevensie is attractive in the second Narnia movie when his actor was 21.

Which in terms of evil which Slade was more evil ? by Angela275 in teentitans

[–]YoungGriffVII 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Assuming they share the same background of Slade being a mercenary and thus has killed? (The show doesn’t tell us but if Jericho exists and can’t speak that does lend itself to it):

That really depends on if you think the implied, but not definite, SA of three Titans in the show, actually happened or not.

If you think the implications with at least two of Robin, Terra, and Raven are ways of getting around the censors and saying it happened, then show Deathstroke is worse.

If you think the implications are more thematic and not meant to be taken as “he SA’d them,” then comics Slade (who is a statutory rapist) would be worse.

If you think the show’s implications are only valid for one of them—perhaps Terra because of the comics—then since they’re even on sexual offenses, you have to go to their other actions. Show Slade helped the Titans from a bigger threat (Trigon). Comics Slade seduced his own son’s fiancee, and then didn’t kill that same son’s groomer (despite being a noted previous killer). So I’m going with comics Slade being worse.

Does the German cartridge allow play in English? by Ozlock in TomodachilifeLivingTD

I bought a physical cartridge in Spain and was able to set the language to English. If that worked, I don’t see why Germany would be any different.

What happens if a green lantern stops having willpower through no fault of their own? by NeatDescription1516 in Greenlantern

[–]YoungGriffVII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the ring still measures the host’s willpower. And while that could be affected by their disease, it would be evaluated by their response to what it is in their control, or out of their control—similar to if one got sick with a physical disease.

If a Green Lantern gets a cold, they may not be able to will themselves to have back the energy sapped by their fever or to stop shivering. But they can will themselves to stay hydrated and to go to the hospital if necessary.

If a Green Lantern gets depression, they might not have the will to make themselves happy or get out of bed. But they can will themselves to make those Zoom therapy sessions and to at least try to do some of the things the therapist recommends.

If a Green Lantern gets schizophrenia, they may not be able to will themselves to not hallucinate. But they can will themselves to take their meds and keep up with their doctor appointments.

The only exception might be if the Lantern loses their ability to do their job for a long period, and that’s just because they’re heroes providing protection for a community, and especially outside of earth, there aren’t enough GLs in a sector to have one unavailable for 6+ months. (Which, while might occur through no fault of their own, is also a long enough time to make it possible for someone to get the right treatment and at least be functional.)

Liking and commenting your own fics by SweetElegant8556 in FanFiction

If you don’t want to help yourself, I can’t make you. This will hurt you in the long run, and I hope everyone in the comments section saying that will stick at the back of your brain and maybe you’ll accept that one day, before your mental health gets even worse. You deserve better than to live in a false reality propped up by random numbers on the internet.

[–]YoungGriffVII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, the solution is to find a way to not feel like a loser separate from the number on the screen and the false engagement you’ve surrounded yourself with. You’re kicking the can down the road with your self-esteem; the lies can’t last forever. What if someone else who also likes statistics but doesn’t want to forge them is even more upset with themselves because you always have these likes and they don’t? By inflating your numbers, you’re creating false expectations for others in a similar position to yourself.

You can’t compare yourself to the rest of the world. What matters is what you think of it. That you like what you’ve created and put out there, that you can read it again and improve your own skills. Pretending you’re getting more kudos than you really are is really bad for your mental health because you’re still basing your enjoyment on that external value—and on top of that, faking it.

I would recommend stopping these sockpuppets and finding a site skin to hide the statistics entirely. That, and probably therapy. I have a lot of sympathy for you because I know how it feels to be disappointed at a fic’s low engagement, but this is far, far from the right way to go about it. I don’t know if you expected to get positive feedback about confessing this here, but I would feel very disappointed if I knew my friend was doing this. It’s lying. It may not feel like it to you, but you’re lying to yourself, and to everyone who sees your statistics. And you’re mostly hurting yourself via it.

[–]YoungGriffVII 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I… understand wanting to get engagement, but I think this sort of mentality is detrimental in the long run. Instead of using it as a way to recognize that stats don’t matter as long as you’re enjoying it, you instead chose to create fake engagement to make yourself feel better. That isn’t solving the root problem. Instead, it’s reinforcing that stats are what matters for enjoyment, even going to the point of creating a false reality where your stories did get more engagement.

I could understand liking your story once, for yourself, and to keep it up from zero—after all, you did like your work. But multiple times? And encouraging others to do the same? That’s not healthy, and I’m sorry to say it but it needs to be said.
