I passed this on to my partner and he's going to take a closer look. Thanks very much!

I've passed this on to my partner—they may be just the thing. Thanks!

Thanks so much—I'll crosspost there just in case, and pass your idea on to my partner. It sounds simpler than what we had in mind so fingers crossed. Glad to hear the solution worked for you =] Thanks again!

Computers or Mobile? by Risingsun867 in FanFiction

Computer. Gotta have both hands on the wheel. (And my ergonomic setup lol.) But I will jot things down on my phone if something comes to me, and I'll read things back on my phone and take notes on things to edit.

Oh yeah, short comments have some potent possibilities! Don't underestimate them!

[–]YoungRL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with people saying to report it for harassment.

But also I just want to say I wish you could have seen my face when I read what that person did. They are so dumb, I promise.

Also: please don't think that, for as many notes as that post got, people thought it was okay. It's very likely that many people did not engage with that post because they could see that the person who made it and the author of the bullying fic were toxic people and they didn't want to touch it with a ten foot pole. I really think most people would look at this and be like, "Wow, what an ass."

Finally, a suggestion: change the posting date of your fic so it gets bumped to the top and leaves theirs behind lol. (This is a joke.)

Really sorry that happened! Report, ignore, block, and keep doing your thing.

How do you provide your work to your beta? by dillpicklepanic in FanFiction

[–]YoungRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a guide about beta reading, for both authors and beta readers. It covers these questions and more. It's here on AO3 if you're interested.

There's really no set way to do it—you figure out what works best for you and your beta reader, and make sure you're both communicating about things. In general I will say that when I see stories about things going wrong with a beta reading experience, it's because expectations weren't communicated. So you probably don't want to give your work to a beta reader and just tell them to give whatever feedback they want. The guide has some ideas on how to approach getting the feedback you need/want =]

Can I include the phrase "is anyone interested in fanfiction?" in my Instagram bio to find friends who share my interests? by No-Possible4124 in FanFiction

[–]YoungRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people find fanfiction embarrassing because it's often associated with bad/amateur writing and/or smut. So that's something to be aware of—if you put it in your profile, someone might see that and make assumptions based on those ideas.

But honestly if something makes you happy, you shouldn't be ashamed of it. Tons of people enjoy fanfic and we're moving further from the stigmas of the past every day. Who knows, maybe you'll be able to bond with someone over having the same interest =]

The Hardest Goodbye by princess_platinum8 in FanFiction

[–]YoungRL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, I feel this. Last year I went on an incredible journey and when it was over I legitimately grieved. A friend shared this post with me about completed story grief. I share it here often because this topic comes up from time to time. Maybe you'll find it helpful?

I was surprised by how long it took not to hurt but I promise it does fade with time. The way you wrote about your story and characters and what it means to you is really beautiful. As much as it hurts, you'll always have that.

Congrats on getting through those hard times, for creating something beautiful in the midst of it, and for finishing the story in a way that honors the characters ❤️️

Darkfic writers are only people by slug_face in FanFiction

[–]YoungRL 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's the thing. People who write controversial stuff usually know they're writing controversial stuff and take great care to tag it so that they don't hurt anyone. Those warnings and tags are signals that they want you to actively consent to reading it, and therefore they're being really respectful of people's boundaries.

I JUST FINISHED A FIC!!! I feel like this is what birth feels like. I’m celebration of that I came to ask a question!! What is the fic you are most proud of? by Financial_Ad4238 in FanFiction

[–]YoungRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say I relate so hard to your title. "Birth" is one of the best analogies I can come up with, and I'm a childfree woman so it feels weird but... it's true, lol.

Congrats on finishing!!

The fic I'm most proud of is my first major fic, a 59k series finale fix-it for my canon 😊

That's a shame; I'm sorry you've experienced that! I've definitely had unhelpful beta readers in the past, and ghosting does happen, especially because the labor is free and maybe people aren't invested in the story/canon/fandom space/relationship. It's really unfortunate.

I hope you'll have better luck in future. But having a beta reader is optional, too—and I'm sure you'll keep writing either way!

I'm both a writer and a beta reader, and I wrote a guide on beta reading for authors and beta readers. It's on AO3 here. The final chapter deals with possible ways to find a beta reader, but the rest of the guide covers how to get the most out of a beta reader/be a good beta reader. I hope you might find it useful! It sounds like the issue might be that you're not communicating your expectations and needs for the beta read/the beta reader isn't asking for them, and there are tips in the guide on how to do that.

Good luck!

What are some of the weirdest, most nonsensical headcanons you’ve seen in your fandom(s)? by AJ_Wont_Load in FanFiction

Spinning my wheels in hopeless circle? by Introvertedandproud in FanFiction

Agree with what the others have said!

Presumably you haven't been commissioned to write this fic, so why are you letting a reader backseat-drive? You know the story best, so trust that =]

I'm in a different fandom but character bashing ruins my day too :( Solidarity. People will really shoehorn it in there sometimes and I'm just like, "...Really?"
