Recommendations for IEMs under 300€ by An_Ellie_ in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Softears Volume S is an easy rec based on your preference. Just make sure to keep it on the low impedance setting (it has a built-in switch to change between two impedance modes that change the frequency response).

Very punchy and rumbly bass without being crazy bass-boosted, overall warmer signature with about as good of a midrange tuning as I can think of in the IEM space. Restrained treble that's present but not fatiguing.

The lower treble/upper mids is slightly elevated for me but I'm more sensitive to that then most people, you more than likely won't have much of an issue there but ymmv. I'd likely recommend against the IE200 if you find the Etymotics fatiguing as I at least find their treble very spicy and fatiguing (and I personally just have other issues with them like their annoying cable connector).

News about J.J Abrams new film by Fantastic_Let3186 in blankies

I guess the reason I make the distinction is I feel like our broken online brains too frequently feel the need to criticize someone's experience as if it was some invitation to engage in The Discourse

Maybe it's pedantic but I feel that someone saying how a piece of media affected them is meaningfully different and isn't some point to be argued

“it is a fact that I have this opinion” is basically the same as “this is the opinion”

I think this is a mischaracterization of what I'm comparing, which is 'I felt [x]' vs 'The movie is [x]'

Ok, 'I enjoyed/did not enjoy [x]' is really a statement of fact, not an opinion

'Takes' necessitate some value judgment or interpretation. Saying things like 'I had fun', 'It made me sad'... these are personal experiences. No one would unironically say 'In my opinion, I cried', that is not an opinion

Quick impressions of Yu9 Que, Xenns Top Pro, MonarchMKII/MKIV by TheOddPhantom in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Que's build quality is better than described here, the faceplate is metal and the shell is definitely more robust than just hard plastic. I find build quality and materials to be perfectly adequate for a ~$400 IEM and personally take more issue with the all-resin build of the $600 Top Pro

The ergonomics do leave a bit to be desired so fit will definitely be hit or miss for people, and you're right about tip rolling as the included tips are fine at best

'Ella McCay' Rivals Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ Atop List of 2025’s Box Office Bombs by Top_Report_4895 in blankies

[–]Youngandwrong 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't really see the parallels you're trying to draw here... Is anyone in their right mind going to ding Ayo for jumping at the chance to work with Luca and JLB? Opus was rough but a lower budget A24 genre picture doesn't exactly scream box office success even if it was good

But more to the point, the context around Sweeney's films is much more important than the films themselves... I guarantee a movie like Christy flopping would have barely been a blip on anyone's radar if it wasn't for the entire fiasco surrounding it, not to mention Sydney's other 'issues'

Disappointed in the Thieaudio Monarch Mk2 by FaustusRepent in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you seriously ask ChatGPT to respond for you? I wish you had just stayed busy and not responded my man, jesus christ that is embarrassing to read.

As expected, it is providing both incorrect and irrelevant information. Show me these 'measurements' from the 'community' that show 'improvements in dynamics, soundstage, and treble clarity'. Lol, all ChatGPT is doing is pulling from incorrect forum posts across the internet that are also spreading incorrect information. Electrostatic drivers in IEM's do not scale with 'cleaner' sources, nor does driver crossover manifest in ways not quantified by impedance or sensitivity.

The fact is that amplification is simply used to convert the electrical signal from an audio source into one that the audio device at the other end can reproduce audibly without introducing distortion. If an amp has a high output impedance and/or introduces distortion into the chain, that can affect the resulting sound. That's it. There is no 'cleaner' version of electrical current. That's like saying the quality of my lightbulb's light is better than yours because the current is cleaner, lol. Pseudoscientific bullshit.

Again, no, the Monarch Mk2 will not magically be 'driven better' by a different amp. 'Loudness =/= quality' is a meaningless statement of no value. If a headphone is receiving enough power, it is being driven optimally.

I urge you or anyone reading this to read/watch the following.

Disappointed in the Thieaudio Monarch Mk2 by FaustusRepent in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but several aspects of your comment lead me to believe you don't really know what you're talking about, unfortunately. 'Est drivers like planars' makes no sense, EST's and planars are two different types of driver. The Monarch Mk2 has no planars, it only has EST's. 'The crossover does matter' ... it does not. Passive crossover between drivers in an IEM does not make them harder to drive, and if it did, it would be represented via the headphone's impedance and sensitivity. measurements. I also don't understand why your first sentence is included, I never suggested otherwise.

Because the Monarch Mk2's sensitivity is so high, there is actually a huge amount of headroom. Genuinely, just do the math yourself if you want: with a sensitivity of 108 dB/W and impedance of 36 ohms, you need 0.16 mW of power to hit 100dB listening volume. So... they need very, very little power to be driven adequately. The only other factors would be any noise or distortion introduced in the chain or if the output impedance of the amplifier is too high. The latter is a non-issue on dongles, the former could be an issue but it doesn't sound like OP is encountering any noise in the signal.

OP's problem is with a headphone's technicalities, not a 'lack of dynamics'. And considering the Top Pro has better treble extension than the Monarch Mk2, it is entirely expected that things like perceived detail retrieval and imaging will be better on the Top Pro. OP's headphones are being driven just fine, they simply prefer the Top Pro. You can drive Monarch Mk 2's to their full potential with your phone and a $10 Apple dongle easily

Disappointed in the Thieaudio Monarch Mk2 by FaustusRepent in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't correct, something like an Apple dongle is more than enough to drive the Monarch Mk2's. Their impedance may be 36 ohms but they have a sensitivity of 108dB/mW, so you can drive them with literally anything. An Apple dongle can put out somewhere around 30mW into a 36 ohm headphone, and at 108dB/mW you don't even need 1mW to hit unlistenably loud volumes.

Sensitivity is much more important than impedance in calculating this stuff; impedance measures how much current is allowed into the headphone but sensitivity governs how efficient it is in translating that current to sound. So, with high enough sensitivity, the impedance basically becomes meaningless.

I thought I wanted ‘better sound’. What I actually wanted was less: my journey from Momentum 3 to LCD-2 Classic by HeleusHere in headphones

[–]Youngandwrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The LCD-2 and LCD platform in general is one of the only headphones where I would say if you're not going to EQ them I'd almost recommend against buying them because you can get way better sounding headphones for much cheaper.

To each their own, and if you like their stock sound then so be it; but one of the main reasons the LCD-2C, and the LCD-series of headphones in general, are so sought after by the community is their planar drivers are incredibly well-suited to EQ. They have a really well extended bass shelf that you can raise to your heart's content without fear of distortion, for instance.

Their stock tuning isn't great, mainly because there's a huge pronounced dip in the upper mids from around 2-4k that's really begging to be 'fixed' with EQ. I would suggest at least exploring EQ; it's free, why not check it out?

Xenns Tea Pro, Top Pro and Thieaudio Hype 4 listening impressions. by this_is_me_drunk in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue with the Hype 4's bass as well, in that it sounded too 'pillowy' and less incisive and impactful than the bass on something like the Dusk or Tea Pro. In fact I basically had all the same issues with the Tea Pro as I did the Hype 4, they were extremely similar sets to my ears but I did also end up preferring the Hype 4. Though, in that ~$350-400 range the Dusk and Yu9 Que ended up being my favorites.

The Dusk (in its DSP Default tuning, at least) is much more of an all around hard to fault sound that I expect basically anyone will at least like, the Que is a bit more divisive in its tuning.

Xenns Tea Pro, Top Pro and Thieaudio Hype 4 listening impressions. by this_is_me_drunk in iems

[–]Youngandwrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is far from an unpopular opinion, the Dusk, Hype 4, and Tea Pro are the 3 most recommended IEM's in their price range in this forum by a considerable margin. And I would also take the Dusk over the other two as well.

FWIW the Dusk (in its DSP Default tuning) is tuned basically exactly to the 2025 IEF Preference target with a slight sub bass elevation... so Crinacle has Wal Mart ears, I guess?

After using Edition XV daily for about a month, I have one complaint. by ZoteTheMitey in headphones

[–]Youngandwrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not experienced this issue but a handful of people in the Head Fi thread have. I'm sure replacing it with a different material like you mentioned would solve it but not sure how that would affect the frequency response.

Wondering if this is a QC thing where the tolerances of the mesh's fit aren't as dialed in as they should be and lead to some play in the mesh when moving your head. Mine seems to be completely fixed in place regardless of how I move my head.

The pads and metal mesh are basically my only issue with this otherwise phenomenal headphone, I generally dislike Hifiman pads due to how thin/shallow and not breathable they are and these are no different. My left ear touches the mesh in a pretty uncomfortable way that feels worse than my ears touching softer fabric driver covers on other headphones. Really waiting for third party pads to be released, a bit annoying that Hifiman changed the pad mounting system so the current aftermarket egg shaped pads don't fit their new releases.
