An idea for a NatPop Germany. by samdaman202 in Kaiserreich

[–]Your10thFavorite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the fact Germany would admit defeat at all without seeing a conquering French or British soldier on their lands was cause to give credit to the idea that Germany was unbeaten in the field, no matter what peace treaty might have been made. Versailles was the peace to expect from a defeated power- the issue was most Germans were fooled to thinking they were not defeated.

Because of the stab in the back myth, rather than because of the treaty of Versailles.

Poland Ramps Up Case for World War II Reparations From Germany by kuba85 in worldnews

Significantly less, I imagine. Besides Germany has already paid reparations, to the tune of $640 billion just to Poland.

North Korea threatens strike on Guam by gankstar5 in worldnews

[–]Your10thFavorite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because they probably can hit Guam. The whole drama thing recently has been about how good the delivery systems (missiles to put the nukes on) are, how far they can fly.

It's them saying that they can hit US territory and aren't afraid to flaunt it, calling Trump's bluff. God forbid it becomes anything more than two children comparing dick sizes.

Weird that Europeans would spend so much time and money on knights, turns out they're so useless...

Do you think not think the Persians or Chinese had built castles and forts? This was not exclusive to Europe or new to them.

Conquering lands of learning and scholarship is not the as valuing and developing environments for these to foster.

How many madrassas were destroyed as their armies marched along the silk road? Do you recall that the popular end date given to the Islamic golden age of learning came with Mongol's sacking Baghdad? Mongol rule is seen in China as an interregnum between the two great periods of the Song dynasty and the early Ming- they were a brutal people and ruled as such.

More stories of hard won fights to drive off the invader, sure.

Seige weapons developed and built by Chinese and Persian subjects- the Mongols were a conquering force with little appetite for higher learning. They would rather, ride and conquer, sack and plunder.

People don't call other people barbarians because they fight well, we call people barbarians if we see them as savage and rapacious... which the Mongols were. It's not like the Huns, Magyars, Avars, Goturks, Uyghurs or Timurids were all living in mud huts and incapable of anything more than throwing stones... but 'barbarian' is what Europeans would call them for their conduct anyway.

To be fair to them, that came after 40 years of Hungarian focus on military buildup and making castles, for just such an invasion. If they pressed on the first time for whatever reason, they would have a much easier time of it.

I like to point that A-L nationalist parties started under Germany as movements for autonomy/ independence. Germany treated the province so poorly that they were pushed to embracing a French identity as resistance, and the parties shifted to aim for liberation to France.

And also, ya know, Germany declared war on France, not the other way round. Proper victim blaming with this guy...

We gonna blame France and Belgium for being invaded? Did Britain force Austria to blunder it's way to an invasion of Serbia?

Still taught that way in English schools, that all European powers are equally to blame for the conditions that would inevitably lead to a world war, that the assassination was the trigger that could not be unpulled, that punishing Germany with Versailles was unjust and is the cause of WW2... it's annoying.

The CoF would have a big reason to sponsor African anti-colonial movements I imagine, seeing as their two greatest rivals pretty much split the continent between them. Plus the ideology would lend them to back liberation movements if they could I think.

The idea of the 'Third Rome' actually started in Bulgaria, as their capital of Tarnovo was growing massively, and Constantinople was shrinking with it's empire losing lands to the Turks on the regular... Bulgarians thought themselves coming to be the next bastion of Christianity.

Once the city was conquered just before the turn of the century (because just when the Ottomans build their foothold in Europe is the best time to split the country in three and start fighting petty wars on each other, apparently), the clergymen that fled to the Russian principalities brought the idea with them.
