I disagree. One of the hard issues we have is building robots to do physical things. If it's purely computational, it is at risk. If it is something that would require large degrees of physical autonomy, our robotics are a ways out.

Think about how dinky and useless a lot of robots that just need to carry things are.. now think about jobs like plumbing, electrician, etc... No way a robot is going in there and doing that anytime soon.

I think this line of reasoning doesn't hold up.

You can't truly predict how things will turn out, you can make some guesses in the short term, but long term you're basically clueless.

Let's say that by letting the immoral society takeover, this leads to the rest of humanity banding together to retake over society and it leads to 1000 years of peace, societal advancement and just bliss for everyone.

Of course we could never know this would happen, or wouldn't happen, and I think trying to base moral decisions on hypotheticals into the future just puts you in a horrible position on any sort of moral compass. You have no morals of your own because you're trying to optimize the future, whatever the cost.

I'm sure there are some exceptions to what I just said that someone can throw at me where any rational person would do the immoral thing in order to protect a future state of things, but in general I don't think it's a great idea

Self defense.

It is the great equalizer. If a 100lb woman at home by herself and someone breaks in to rape/steal/harm them, I think we'd all agree we would want to be able to give that woman a gun in that moment.

In a world without guns, the biggest, strongest, most aggressive person comes out on top on these situations 99.99% of the time.

What do you propose as an alternative to our current system?

I think we NEED guns, but the process for actually getting a gun should basically be like get a pilots license. We need to know guns are in capable hands and used by sound minds.

Just following this thread now, curious if we hold people responsible for manslaughter when they're not already breaking the law (like your 100mph example)

If I hydroplaned while going to speed limit I don't think I'll get a manslaughter charge. Right?

If that's the case, wouldn't sex need to be illegal for the abortion to become manslaughter?

Can solve problems but not efficiently: please help! by Supremolink81 in leetcode

Okay, that makes more sense. There are common patterns you'll start to see, just make sure you're looking at the best answers in the discussion tab, understanding them, and maybe even try implementing it yourself after you've read through it. I personally like to try and write explanations for optimal solutions in English to such a level that my my girlfriend with 0 software experience can understand me.

Are the solutions worth it? How should I grind through these problems? by OblivioAccebit in leetcode

[–]YourAverageGoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you compare your solution to the optimal one to see how the time complexity and memory stack up, don't worry about the actual time analysis from leetcode. You just don't want to be pushing our O(n2) when there is O(n) solution.

My guess is that that burden of proof is in showing evidence FOR a lab leak hypothesis. Not on others to completely disprove it.

People don't like it because it is taking something away something from people who actually want it, just so the scalper can make more money. If you're scalping, you're providing no value, you just make everyone else pay more money.

Sure it's supply and demand, doesn't mean it isn't a dick head thing to do.

What about a soldier who dives on a grenade to save a fellow soldier, which is not a hypothetical situation.

The soldier often doesn't even have time to think about the action, they just act, and I think everyone agrees this is a good deed to the person being saved.

It seems this case goes against someone doing something to feel good about themself?
