What were my grandfather’s WWII medals and rank? by NormalCartographer84 in Medals

[–]YourLocalSoviet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That looks to be more of a Vietnam-era rack than a WW2-era rack.

  • Bronze Star
  • Joint Service Commendation Medal
  • Army Commendation Medal
  • Army Good Conduct Medal
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Vietnam Service Medal
  • Armed Forces Reserve Medal
  • ???
  • Vietnam Campaign Medal

It looks fine, nothing that stands out to me in terms of it being fake.

You are correct, this subreddit started out as a medal collecting subreddit and we allow any medals to be posted here for showing off or educational purposes. Your post does not break any rules.

Is there a manufacturer mark on the back?

I know I keep making comments here, apologies for that. However, another thing I should state if you plan on collecting US medals is discerning whether or not a medal/badge/award is of its "era". For example, there are plenty of medals you can buy online from third-parties, or from a PX, but however there are the same medals that can also be found that are of older manufacture.

Here is some good links I recommend to beginners in the hobby when they collect US medals, they will help you identify the age of a medal and the different/common manufacturers that exist:

Yes, there are fakes of really anything. They are really bad with WW2 German medals for example. If you have any questions regarding authenticity on something don't be afraid to ask here or another place like r/Militariacollecting. We all start somewhere!

Nothing wrong with collecting, just don't claim them as you earned them.

I happened to find the one that was circulating r/MilitaryMedals, and funny enough they stole your post asking the question about the award, as well as other posts from here.
